Batch
Personally I use 3/8 and 30g 6's clear pigeon, Seems to suit me ok........when the pigeons are about and decide to play ball that is You will get many variations and personal preferences from others, but really it is a case of trying different combinations out until you find one that you are happy/confident with. BenBhoy
like batch has said really all about trying things out. i presume from your post you have a m/c gun? just have a bit of experiment. same for carts really, think it all up to you deciding to shoot at sensible distances for carts used. i quite often use 7.5g now and find they do the job fine, as long as im sensible in my shots. bunny_blaster
I use 28g 7's through cylinder with the auto or cylinder/ 1/4 with the over/under Cheers Ben
Alycidon
If you are a novice or below average shot ( be honest !!) then use open chokes and keep the range down if you use smaller shot like 7s. A better shot can handle a bit of choke and a bit more distance. Personally I used a fixed choke game gun, I have 2 sets of barrels for it, almost all the time I use 1/4 + 1/2, I use the tighter top barrel first with 5 shot. If distance is likely to be an issue then I shove the 3/4 + 1/2 set on. Years ago when a novice I used a Miroku skeet gun with cyl/cyl and 7s with good results close in but a lot of runners. garygreengrass
I use 1/4 + 1/2 30g or 32g 6s
Cranfield
In a semi auto I use 1/4 choke, in a O/U I use 1/4 and 1/2 choke. Cartridges are mainly 28 or 30gm No 6 felt wad. These combinations seem to work efficiently for pigeons and corvids over decoys, or passing shots.
fenboy
I use a auto and when I first brought it I struggled so used 1/4 choke to give me a better chance of a hit ,now I have had it a good while and have a feel for the gun I stick with 3/4 as it gives me better odds on the longer birds and I also find I am getting less pricked ones I use 30 grams of 6.5 with a felt wad. proTOM1
Using a semi with half chock and either 28g 6s or 28g 7.5s works for me
motty
I more often than not use the semi with 1/2 choke and 30gm 6 or 28gm 7- 7 1/2. All will kill pigeons and crows to 50 yards.

A Im no novice nor below an average shot and use open chokes with small shot. If your decoying birds to within a sensible range, 35 yards or less then why use tight chokes with heavier loads? All your going to do obliterate pigeons at closer ranges. Birds can still be taken out cleanly at ranges beyond that with lighter loads and open chokes. You dont need to use tight chokes and heavier loads to kill pigeons. Cheers Ben
