Wildfowler12
Just wondered what steel shot cartridges you guys are using at the minute? What's hot and what's not? Particularly interested in standard 2 3/4 steel, not HP.

Wildfowler12
I tried them last year, only had a couple of shots with them so couldn't really form an opinion. I believe they do a 2 3/4 35g no,4 cartridge aswell?? Clever say they're more powerful and give an extra 15m range?? welshboy
The problem with the standard loads 70mm is the 12 newtons limit in the cip rules. speed m/s * wt grams/1000 must not exceed 12. So increasing the load reduces the speed because of cip. For the foreshore and longer ranges I have been thinking about getting some Black Gold 1500 fps 28g lead and stripping out the lead components and reloading with steel shot and wad. To my simple mind for the same shot weight it should have a similar speed. A fast steel 3.5mm pellet should have plenty of penetration. Anybody know anything about the theory before I do it ? Not too concerned about a lighter steel load as my 40 yds pattern tests are between 80 and 90 % through 3/8 and 1/2 chokes. I read that Mallard only need a 80 pellet count in a 30 inch circle and 3.5mm steel should demolish them.Starting with about 150 3.5mm steel pellets and a tight pattern easily achieves the 80 pellets beyond 40 yards. I will stick with SAGA 34g no5 3mm for teal on a flight pond at closer ranges.

Wildfowler12
Anybody tried hull steel game extra? Or Laylvale supreme steel (both 32g 4s)?
chris t
I use the old version hull steel game with the photo degradeable plastic wad. 32g 5s or 4s. Really cheap cartridge. Makes my semi cycle really nicely and seems to work well for me on pigeons (decoying). But now they have changed over to an ordinary plastic wad. So I bought all the old type I could from whereever I could. PM me if you know of any around the derby/burton (midlands area) Hate the plastic wads left all over my farm land. They are there forever it seems. Chris
ste12b
"replacing lead shot with steel will end up in tears, not yours because you will prob be dead! madness.craig" +1 don't do it. From what i have read it will increase the pressure, plus you may not be able to close the cartridge. chris t
if you shot everything you fired at you've probably give it all up, due to lack of a challenge.
