Fin, Fur and Feather

It's been a busy few weeks, and nicely varied too.

Kicking off with an invite to fish an exclusive private stretch of the River Test at Leckford, Romsey - a simply beaufitul place. Ive fished several beats on the river over the year and this one trumps them all hands down. Fishing was tough - wily end of season trout getting ready to spawn - after using nearly every fly in the book a huge gold head damsel came good, but the fish were taking out of aggression rather than feeding. Great sport on a #4 rod though and 3 fabulous brownies for tea!

A few nights later we hit the bunnies. Action from the off and I was shooting the HMR off the roof of the Navara whilst sitting on the dog box - comfy! After an hour Aaron joined me in the back and we switched to the 12g's as there were simply so many rabbits and this was a culling exercise for the farmer. After 3 hours we were out of shells having shot all 3 boxes I bought (a bit under prepared!) and after a count up we had a nice round 50 rabbits - an awesome nights shooting.

Finally today I got back out on the pigeon. I shot a flightline that Ive been shooting all summer with some nice bags - previous trips have been over rape stubble, then disced rape and today was fresh drilled wheat. It was slow most of the day but I built a steady bag but not the biggest and was pleased with how I shot. Amazing that apaprt from 1 proper sized woody the rest were all young birds - very tough to shot in the strong wind today - a sniff of trouble and them turned and shot off in the wind. I had to add alot of foliage to the hide also as the normal stealth net didnt seam to be enough.

Love this time of year - so much to go at!

The brownies were all around the 3lb mark.

The gun.. well it was bought as a starter gun into the world or semi autos, I nearly sold it on as it plays up something silly with anything other than 70mm shells, but since feeding it nothing else it's performed great and fits me better than any other gun in the cabinet, plus I prefer it for shooting from the hide as its much easier to load than an o/u - so it's kind of a guilty pleasure!
