Hi All,

Was thinking of trying to get some sort of video camera attached to my gun & wondered if any of you guys out there had done this before? i've seen loads of action cameras on the web but just wondered if there was a specific tailor made video camera & bracket designed to do the job? would just like to capture some of my shots on film both for interest and learning purposes.... any help would be much appreciated.... i need it to fit onto and over & under or a semi auto shotgun.

Cheers

The first camera i tried this with was a gift from a friend (so free) - an Oregon Scientic ATC2000K. It (like most action cameras) are designed to be attached to helmets, so attaching it to a gun was tricky. I used the bike handle bar attachment on the extended magazine of my Benelli M2, but the noise from the gun was crazy! I then rigged the camera to the brim of a baseball cap which was much better but i did look a bit 'special' :oops:

I upgraded recently to a Contour GPS HD camera which came with a mount designed to attach the camera to the thick band of motorcycle/skiing goggles, however it works just fine on a baseball cap and thats what i use now. It also came with a RIS mount for mounting on guns with picatinny rails and that works fine on rifle calibre guns but isn't strong enough for 12 bore, which i found out with comedy results! (Camera goes flying at 0:57)

If you think you're going to be regularly making videos i would highly recommend getting an HD camera and spending the extra money, the results are much better! N.B. The video shown here has had the HD footage converted from the original .MOV files to a Windows Movie Maker friendly format and lost A LOT of its quality along the way.

This is what the camera looks like on the cap;

Not great, but fairly comfortable

Wow!!!!! Thanks so much for the detailed reply!!! I like the idea of having the camera attached to the gun as it would give you a real time view of lead and distance which would help as a learning tool, it would be good to reflect on shots afterwards to see where I went wrong!!! Or good to look back on those cracking shots to see the rare occasions that I get it right !!!! Anyway will look into the cameras you have mention and see what I can afford!!! Thanks for the advice, will keep you updated If I buy one.

Cheers!!

Really?? Isn't it a bit like wanting to know why someone voted 'I don't know' in a survey that requires a 'Yes', 'No', 'I don't know' answer?! :lol:

very true but the mentality of the respondant is very important. I am also interested in the purpose of the footage, is it just for "home video", or does it have a deeper purpose?

It's mainly gun porn 'home video' for me :drool: , but it is useful for going over the footage to review where i made mistakes in PSG stages and hopefully how to correct them :good:

I feel that when I shoot pigeons and mis sometimes it would be really helpful to go over the situation again at a later stage and ***** what the problem may have been, dwelling on it at the time will only help me miss the next one! If the camera were placed in the correct position not only could lead be looked into But also angle of shot. I feel the latter would be really useful to me personally, I'm not saying this is the Same for everyone but for me it would be good.. At the end of the a good pigeon shooting day all the shots are a blur to me, I usually hit some gooduns but also mis some easy and long shots! Say if I've had 100 shots and missed 40 of them, why is this? Wouldn't it be good to be able to review each shot to see why? Surely a slow motion shot would help highlight problems? Using this knowledge would help me learn to correct maybe a common denominator that is hindering my shot???? I dunno really.......... still I'd really like to try it...... And also having some of these fantastic days pigeon shooting on film for keepsakes would be amazing...... It would be great to watch them back when I'm 90!!! Show the kids what we used to get upto back in the day :good: :good:

I too had a oregon camera same as breastman, fitted easily using the supplied mounts to my hatsan semi, test footage shows how much recoil the camera picks up from gun, so I cant see how you'd gain any info from watching missed shots, far better to use a hand held video camera, mounted on a pole behind me, the LCD screen pointing towards me so I can see at a glance what area its filming, and a hand held remote for zooming in and out, something the oregan cant do
