Been out trying B.I.F using the 600mm plus 1.4TC its so difficult to pick up the birds and track that I thought I would try with something relatively easy like these swans, little bit noisy due to poor light, but think there is enough there to encourage me to keep going. any thoughts always welcome

These shots are excellent Doc. Does the TC keep the AF or were you doing it manually?

Its hard to strike the right shutter speed for the situation when its getting dark, I would say you hit the nail on the head with these though. Do you have any techniques for picking up the birds? I find it hard enough at 300

The 600mm prime will aoto focus with the 1.4 TC (but not a 2x TC)

as far as technique goes ... no its just practice, I have spent most of the last year practising picking up a bird and tracking it, I used a 100 - 400 zoom, picking them up at 100mm and zooming in as I tracked, with the bigger lens its just getting used to where the lens is pointing and hoping you pick up the bird, I have thousands of shots of empty sky and tails of birds, couldnt have done it using the old film ,

Cracking pics :good:

Aside from upping the ISO (You were on 500, so it may go grainy) you could up the exposure in your post processing and shoot at a faster shutter speed... At least it might help your photo taking, so you're not struggling with blurry shots.

Looking at the exif data, you actually have a lot of room to brighten up the photos. The top one was taken at 1/2500, which is pretty quick. If you knocked that down to 1/1000 I bet you'd be able to get the same again, without having blurry birds.

Trouble is Billy

You cant slow it down to much when using the 600mm, dont know if you have seen the Canon f4 its not going to give you steady shots panning due to camera shake despite image stabilization, also unless you go manual and believe me you just cant when shooting birds in flight you will end up overexposing the whites on these type of shots.

The biggest problem is you have to be ready for anything as these thinks happen very quickly, you just cant think oh that looks good I will just go to AV mode put it o 1/500th check my histograms and take the shot, by the time you have seen the shot managed to get them into the picture its all over,

most of the shots I have posted have taken hours of preparation for a shot and then something else happens that you want to shoot very quickly, The stationary birds are much easier as you often have time to faff about but the ones in the air are a whole different ball game, thanks for taking time to offer help. appreciated
