Harnser
Last season many farmers drilled the rape at the normal time and it suffered from the very hard winter we had . It wasent establised enough to winter over . My farmer friend suffered poor yields because of the late drilling and has drilled the rape four weeks ago and it is now well up and looks very good . Normally the rape shooting season dosent really start untill late november onwards when the rape is still very low in hieght and vunerable to the pigeons . I havent seen rape this high at this time of the year before and dont think it will be hit by the pigeons as much as if it was not so high. But we shall see .Snow is forcasted for all of the country so may be the birds will want the rape if it is poking through the snow ,they wont be able to forage as well in the woodlands with the ground covered in snow . BenBhoy
like i said my rape is about ankle height, a lot higher than it was at this time last year, but think farmer was bit late last year, or crop took long time to establish, he harvested much later than most to.. wasn't expecting much but went over there yesterday afternoon to show willing. no pigeon at all feeding on rape, to be expected. not many about at all, only saw 5 all day! ended with 3 shots 2 birds. still, was better than being at work! Colc08
I've not really experienced such high rape crops at such an early stage before. I'm in South Lincs/ Northants near Stamford and the rape crops are cracking on to knee hight already. I'm guessing that after a few sharp frost it will slow it down a bit but will still be well up there by then. I'm wondering; If the pigeons are still on the stubbles or feeding in the woods still and with them not likely to hit the rape in large numbers in maybe November time when the stubbles are ploughed and the nuts have dried up, will they still be likekly to get on the rape. I'm aware it will maybe be thier only option and will still feed in it at any hight but I'm also aware that they prefere a younger sweeter crop to feed on. Any thoughts??
