Stratts
Should soon be getting a WMR for long range bunny and occasional fox was wondering which is the best round for foxes out of the 3 readily available, Cheers #Edited as it was a bit misleading# Edited November 17, 2011 by Stratts
Catweazle
Heavy bullets from WMR don't half bounce. Bear that in mind.
Vermincinerator
Strats, i have a Ruger M77/22 in 22WMR and its a great 100yd bunny killer but IMO wholey unsuitable for fox unless in exceptional circumstances, that being 50yd shots where a terminal hit is easily achieved. You say you are getting the WMR for fox control? i suggest you forget about the WMR and ask for a variation for at least a .22 Hornet but preferably a 222 or 223. If you do decide to go for this inadequate fox round i would suggest the CCI 40grn JHP, however you will soon regret your choice when charley gets up and runs after being shot. Ian. wymberley
Ultimately the answer to this is the most accurate. However, putting that to one side and assuming a satisfactory performance for a moment, at one time I would have said the Federal 50gr but they changed the spec'. Now it has to be the 40gr RWS. This has the highest ME on the market but the BC is poor: This is no problem though, as by the time the higher BC rounds "catch up" with it you're beyond fox range for any of them anyway. Range? Oh no, you think I want whatshisname giving me grief!!!

Thanks mate I changed the original post as it was a quick post and was a bit mis-leading. It'll mainly be for longer bunnies around the farm and occasional fox at close range. What I was wondering was if I had to use a particular round out of the 3 which would be best? All the fox I've encountered on the farm have all been within 50 yards but I am not able to shoot them in Cambs with the .22LR but have been told the WMR is ok? Vermincinerator
Stratts i am using the 30grn Hornady v-max round for all my 22WMR shooting, it has 350fps over the 40grn CCI JHP load and more energy then 17 HMR @ 100yds so for occiasional fox it will do the job as long as you do your bit. It just so happens that this ammo shoots best in my gun, it might not in yours. All i can say is, shoot the ammo which is the most accurate in your rifle. Ian. Archie-fox
I've shot around 4/5 foxes recently with my WMR all useing 30grn V max.....all less than 60 yards around some stables on a new permission...I sold the hmr in favor if this caliber, any further than that I use my .223 or 22/250 but up to 50/60 yards or so I've had not one problem or needed a second shot...as long as you keep to a short range and a accurate shot... tikka.223
I use Hornady V-max 30gr in my WMR and have shot a few foxes with it over the past couple of months. The round is capable of dispatching fox out to 100 yards with proper placement, most of mine have been shot in around 75 yards with no complaints. This boy was dispatched with a Hornady 30 V-max

Dekers
Try a few, my latest WMR hated the 40g ammo when new, but is coming round to them now, it still favours the 30g. My last WMR preferred the 40g Never tried 50g through it. 30-40g Ballistic Tip or HP, they all work on the fox no problem, if you can shoot and don't over extend things! Redditch
Yep, go for the 30 grain, but keep it to ranges that you would also use a 17HMR out to on Fox, i.e. about 60-70 yards, that way you can be sure of a clean kill providing you do your part. More than that and you should look at a vaiation for 222/223 or even 22-250 (Which is a foxing round per se) Edited November 25, 2011 by Redditch
Stratts
Forgot about this thread cheers for the replies chaps. Got meself a CZ 452 and the chap chucked in over 300 50gr FMJ rounds with it which he said were good in the rifle. Seems ok to me and I've taken a few bunnies at around 75 yards, but when they are gone I'll try something a bit lighter and flatter. Placement was gonna be my next question but looks like a headshot does the trick, lol!! Edited January 6, 2012 by Stratts
Vermincinerator
Stratts, just be careful with those FMJs, they will pass straight through your quarry with little or no expansion and will go on for some distance, make sure you know whats behind your intended target. If you want to use them on fox head shots are the only way to go, FMJs cannot be relied upon to give a quick humane kill with body shots. Ian. I've never used a 50g of any sort in my WMR's, but at the same time, I would not put a 50g FMJ (never even seen one) top of my list for bunny bashing. I suspect it would work ok just the same! NOTHING can, but hit a bunny/fox in the right place in the body with one and its lights out!
Stratts
Ok thanks guys that'll explain the lack of damage with the few bunnies I have taken then as the bullet must have gone straight through. I always make sure of a safe backstop but I'm wondering if I should try and sell them and get some 30gr instead?!

Stratts
Not saying anything wrong mate would just prefer to be as safe as poss and if that means not using ammo that goes straight thru risking ricochets then I'd change em!
