haggis
Thinking of upgrading my escort van so can tow a car trailer just wondered what sort of mpg you should expect running around and towing?
huntsman
25 - 30 mpg if its the disco TD5 maybe less just depends whats on the car trailer at the time :o
haggis
Would be towing jags about 2 tonnes. Seen on here people don't rate s2 discos are they that much trouble? I used to have a ex mod 110 that used to do 30+ mpg

Grandalf
Don't even consider a 110 LR for towing. Poor lock makes it a nightmare when reversing trailer. SWB works fine. If you are interested in the mileage of a LR, then you don't need a LR. It is an offroad verhicle (tool). Grandalf
Pheasant Feeder
Combined I get 31-32mpg on a run to Scotland, thats motorway, A82, and lots of single track roads about 1200 miles in total, not towing anything but loaded to the gun'alls. Personally I've had 300tdi disco, td5 disco, and two 2.5td 110's. I've also done countless miles in series 3&4 Disco's 110's are great for local stuff but I wouldn't want to do the Scotland run in one, (I'm 6'2" and heavier than I should be) I find that the only way I can drive one is with my right arm out the window. 300tdi great motors just starting to rot a little now, unless you can drop on lucky. Td5's a little better than the 300 in performance and refinements, but not too complicated for the local garage to do work on them. Series 3's onwards are just way to technical for their own good if you want to do the work or use a local garage. They are great cars to drive and tow with but the cost if anything wen't wrong scares the bejezus out of me hence why I drive a Td5 as my own car. haggis
I do realise that they will be worse than my van for mpg,but its more useful than escort van as I want to tow as well. Just wondered what mpg was,by the sounds of it won't cost that much more a month.
jacksdad
just check if the breakdown services will recover a lawn rover AND a trailer!
ferguson_tom
I cant talk from first hand experience but i have researched a lot and asked various owners into getting a big 4x4 and the disco seemed the most fuel efficient option when compared the to the jap stuff. Supposidly the TD5 hasnt got as much grunt as the 300tdis but more than capable of towing 3.5 tonnes so 2 tonnes wont be a problem. gixer1
Loved my TD5, towed plenty of heavy things and never had any reliability issues with mine, only sold it cause it was just clicking 100k and I bought a Disco3. PhilR
I've got a 2003 TD5 ES Auto and I've done 21,000 miles in the last year and it has returned an average of 24.85mpg during that period, that's local journeys, motorway trips and tootling round the farm. I don't tow with it and I've had it remapped. I took it to Slovenia in the summer, it performed faultlessly over the 2,100 mile trip and as it was nigh on an all motorway journey I kept it on cruise control at 70mph according to my sat nav and it returned 27.42mpg for that trip. Dr_evil
I'd take a 300tdi over a TD5 any day I have a 300 and its a lot less to service than a TD5, might be a little slower but that can be fixed with a few clever mods
andy_s
I haven't towed with mine yet but I get around 25mpg out of my TD5 manual, maybe up to 28mpg if I go a bit steadier than usual.
haggis
Spoke to a friend today she had a older td5 which was chipped and she said it was better than her new Hyundai 4x4 she said it'd do 600 miles on a tank! She got rid of it under scrapage for £3500 it only cost her £1900. How much does the tank hold?
Dr_evil
If its the same size as the 300tdi it'll be about 90L
ST3V3
If its the same size as the 300tdi it'll be about 90L Lnd rover made them 5 litres bigger to try get the same distance from a tank full as the
wickedwickedmotox
I have a d2 td5 on 168k, mine is abused basically off road shooting and in my job. I regularly tow 3.8 tons and yes i know im over my diggers are 3.1t and 1.7t towing returns about 21mpg i dont hang around though! much more power and torque than 300tdi there just ***** pulling away with a load and yes i have had 2 and defenders the onbly advantage is they will run on anything you throw at them where as im 50/50 on used cooking oil at mo! Fuel pump howls though! On the whole i recommend them things to look out fro, sunroof leaking all do it! mass airflow sensor remove the egr valve massive improvement check ecu connectors for oil weepage if so req new engine harness make sure air suspension works ok, this is why i bought a td5 its bloody fantasic for towing and not as bad as people say you wont tow with anything better! good luck! haggis
I'll find out how much they want for it..tomorrow might be over priced.
bobt
My wifes td5 disco does 30 miles each way to work every day, and returns 33 mpg with a gentle foot, manual, chipped and kenlowe fan, before it was chipped it only did 30 mpg. it tows better than most things I have tried, and after a 300 trip you can still walk unlike a deafener. haggis
Ken lowe fan? Do they need one?
Dr_evil
The fan will help keep the engine a little cooler when towing but really shouldn't be a need for one on a healthy TD5
picardy
Get yourself a Isuzu rodeo or hilux mate better on fuel and road tax than the td5 and more reliable and the rodeo will pull 3.5 tonne hope this helps
haggis
She said he'll £5500 for it sb 03 160k td5 i thought that was bit much, maybe I'll look at other stuff thought it would be cheaper than that.
Sco77w
I've just been offered a 2000 td5 with 100k miles, full history and a new mot for £3,800. I've had 2 300tdi discos years back the newest of which was only 18 months old when we got it But since then I've had "normal" cars. Would I be making a mistake going for a12 year old discovery as opposed to sticking with my 6 year old Volvo S40? I realy could do with the extra space tho for the dogs.
