Land Rover Disco Td5

Combined I get 31-32mpg on a run to Scotland, thats motorway, A82, and lots of single track roads about 1200 miles in total, not towing anything but loaded to the gun'alls. Personally I've had 300tdi disco, td5 disco, and two 2.5td 110's. I've also done countless miles in series 3&4 Disco's

110's are great for local stuff but I wouldn't want to do the Scotland run in one, (I'm 6'2" and heavier than I should be) I find that the only way I can drive one is with my right arm out the window.

300tdi great motors just starting to rot a little now, unless you can drop on lucky. Td5's a little better than the 300 in performance and refinements, but not too complicated for the local garage to do work on them.

Series 3's onwards are just way to technical for their own good if you want to do the work or use a local garage. They are great cars to drive and tow with but the cost if anything wen't wrong scares the bejezus out of me hence why I drive a Td5 as my own car.

I cant talk from first hand experience but i have researched a lot and asked various owners into getting a big 4x4 and the disco seemed the most fuel efficient option when compared the to the jap stuff. Supposidly the TD5 hasnt got as much grunt as the 300tdis but more than capable of towing 3.5 tonnes so 2 tonnes wont be a problem.

I've got a 2003 TD5 ES Auto and I've done 21,000 miles in the last year and it has returned an average of 24.85mpg during that period, that's local journeys, motorway trips and tootling round the farm. I don't tow with it and I've had it remapped.

I took it to Slovenia in the summer, it performed faultlessly over the 2,100 mile trip and as it was nigh on an all motorway journey I kept it on cruise control at 70mph according to my sat nav and it returned 27.42mpg for that trip.

I have a d2 td5 on 168k, mine is abused basically off road shooting and in my job. I regularly tow 3.8 tons and yes i know im over my diggers are 3.1t and 1.7t towing returns about 21mpg i dont hang around though! much more power and torque than 300tdi there just ***** pulling away with a load and yes i have had 2 and defenders the onbly advantage is they will run on anything you throw at them where as im 50/50 on used cooking oil at mo! Fuel pump howls though!

On the whole i recommend them things to look out fro,

sunroof leaking all do it!

mass airflow sensor

remove the egr valve massive improvement

check ecu connectors for oil weepage if so req new engine harness

make sure air suspension works ok, this is why i bought a td5 its bloody fantasic for towing and not as bad as people say you wont tow with anything better!

good luck!

My wifes td5 disco does 30 miles each way to work every day, and returns 33 mpg with a gentle foot, manual, chipped and kenlowe fan,

before it was chipped it only did 30 mpg.

it tows better than most things I have tried, and after a 300 trip you can still walk unlike a deafener.

I've just been offered a 2000 td5 with 100k miles, full history and a new mot for £3,800. I've had 2 300tdi discos years back the newest of which was only 18 months old when we got it But since then I've had "normal" cars. Would I be making a mistake going for a12 year old discovery as opposed to sticking with my 6 year old Volvo S40? I realy could do with the extra space tho for the dogs.
