Fox and Rabbit hunting

Today I popped out mainly to finish this weeks squirrel cull, and take any last ones with the rifle that were running about at the base of the trees. I hit the squirrel hot spot, and took 3 of the last remaining squirrels in the wood, and then went off rabbiting.

I shot the first rabbit free hand, and put it into my game bag, and continued. As I neared the next field I could see a fox head poking through the long grass, and quietly lifted the rifle, slipped off the safety, and sent off an Eley Sub. dropped on the spot without a twitch  was taken also free hand at around 22 meters.

I then headed back to field paunch the rabbit, and bag the foxy ready to be removed for disposal after more hunting. Darn fox can be so heavy! :good:

So after the fox was bagged up nicley, and rabbit one was cleaned up next to the river, I washed my hands in the water, and headed back over the field to drop another couple of rabbits, both shot around 15 yards through the head.

One bullet travelled through the head, then back into the shoulder behind, and lodged in the side of the rabbit just under the skin after breaking the back, and destroying the lungs. That was one very dead rabbit :good: I even managed to retrieve the bullet, I have never been able to do this before as usually my shots exit the head and dig into the back stop.

Very good Hunter, excellent stuff mate :good::good:

Are you going to leave any foxes for the .222? :yp:

Very interesting how you found the bullet where it was :P , they do travel some alright.

A well mushroomed one aswell. :P

I have often picked them out of goat carcasess.

Good shooting sir, keep up the good work. :D

Cheers all!

Frank, it was lucky I found that round, as it was just benethe the skin on the left side of the lung. Sure did travel far through that bunny. Two entries, one nasty exit wound on the back of the head.. before entering the shoulder/lung again.

The Hollow Point does seem to work well.

Theres still plenty of fox for the tripple :good:

I got a mouth full at the gun shop for hunting fox with the rimfire and was told it doesnt kill clean at any range. Im now 5 fox in, and all have gone down clean out to 50 yards.

Its all to do with bullet placement and you have the know how and shooting ability to do it right. :good:

Although, for serious fox shooting, that .222 of yours is a better choice at the end of the day. :good:

Good luck. :yp:

Frank.
