digger
Its a few years since I fired more than a few shots with an air rifle but the rat infestation in our yard has got out of hand. Ive borrowed a mates umarex 850 in 177 and zeroed it in at 20 yards. Will flat head pellets be ample or should I look at a specific type? I have pre baited a specific area and the rats are happily mooching around all day so the kill area wont vary beyond 20 yards. They are contentedly licking peanut butter from a strategically placed roof tile as they do all day.
Cannon
Flat head pellets or wadcutters as they're known are good for rats.

fenboy
+1 if your using a 177 at close range I would recommend flat head or hollow point pellets as there will be a risk of over penetration ,if you are confident that you can take head shots though anything will kill them ! working dog
Rats round here like RWS Super H Point. Work well with my HW80 and AA 410 I use them to control the rats round the chickens but tend to rely more on poison to keep the numbers down
chrisjpainter
I'm a believer in the old hollow point jobbies. but i'm also a believer in head shots and as the man above says if it's in the head any pellet will drop em. personal favs are the bisley Pest control fellas. I've used them in .22 and .177 and they're superb
bullet boy
Whichever ones that are accurate!! Ideally nice Flat-head pellet like RWS Hobby or RWS Super H Point would be my preferred option as long as they are accurate in my rifle! Theskyfox
Yep. Flathead or hollowpoint. The beauty is if you miss, they tend to stop very quickly when they hit any other surfaces too. Just a rat-baiting tip I learned...if you start to have trouble getting them to come out, put some cat food (the pouch stuff) out for them on a bowl to eat and sit back a few more yards. They cant just grab it and run away...so have to sit there and eat it. Then you can pick them off... -Andrew
pilgrim73
I have been using .177 Rws supermag flatheads recently in my airarms.Have found them to be very accurate and hard hitting. I have used bisley pest control in the past with great results but cant get them to group in my air arms at all
luckytrigger
Ive never bothered with flat head pellets after many years of rat shooting. Any rat hit in the head with a pellet regardless of whether its a flat head or a dome will be a dead rat. I personally use any domed pellet in my rifles fac or non fac as long as they shoot accuratley.
poguemahone
no need to change pellets for different quarry. find the most accurate pellet for your gun and enjoy your shooting. a rats brain is little more than the size of a pea, so accuracy is what stops them not gimmicky pellets. .177 jsb exact is the most accurate/consistent pellet in my gun, and is more than a match for airgun quarry.
