P/x Or Private Sale ?

Are Gun dealers reasonably fair on p/xing or is it always best to try and get a private sale ? , I just have a Theoben Sirocco .22 gas ram to offload before i can buy SG after cert arrives , I have done some research and think about £250 would be about right for the rifle and scope in excellent condition ( private ) or am I well out ? .

What do you think ?

You will always get a better price selling privately, but then you have all the aggro, time wasters etc & are not guaranteed a sale at all. If you part exchange it you will get less for it but at more convenience to you, it all depends if you need the money now against another gun or not.

My advice list it privately on gun watch (its free) if you haven't sold it by the time your SGC arrives see what you get offered in PX.

+1.

Good advice here.

As the dealer has overheads he will not be able to give you what you want as a cash sale, but on a px he has some room.

Depends on what you are trading it against - I recently sold a 22LR privately - and because i was buying an underlever and trading a Bolt action I would have got more from my local RFD as they can sell a bolt action 22 any day of the week whereas a 22 underlever is not as easy to sell...I made a wrong assumption and the hassle selling privately can sometimes be a pain too...

Understand what you say and fair point made , popping over to nearest RFD ( 12 miles ) to see what offer p/x on new Beretta A300 outlander and S/H A390 , last gun I bought from him was in 73 so maybe some loyalty discount

A private sale is probably the way to go if you're after a maximum return for your gun. I think that half the problem when part-ex'ing it with a dealer/shop is that they have to pay VAT on the sale? I could be wrong, so worth checking

Vat on the profit IIRC. IT depends very much on the dealer and the items in question, certainly if visiting a local dealer well worth taking the Rifle to get a solid PX price.

Interestingly the number of dealers on guntrader who list a gun as a cash price of £XYZ and PX price of £XYZ+50 I know this was made illegal in the motor trade (price is the price regardless of payment method cash/hp etc) is it legal for them to do this and where does the extra £50 go?

Surely if you PX is worth £200 to them trade then that's what they pay... what's the reasoning for telling you they'll charge you and extra £50 for what you are buying? It doesn't matter at the end of the day as it's how much money on top of PX they want that matters!

In general you`ll get a better price privately. Same as when you sell a car. A dealer has to think that if they buy that gun, then will want to make a % mark up on it when they sell it on. They can be flexible sometimes depending on what you are p/xing it against, but then bare in mind that they are probably charging more for the gun your buying then you can get it for elsewhere.

Where its handy is if you dont mind taking a little hit and avoiding all the hassle of selling privately and / or buying privately.

I actually part ex`d the last gun I sold. I had bought it a few years previously privately for £100 and got £150 for it part ex`ing it. Sounds good, but bare in mind the gun I part ex`d it for, i probably paid about £200 over the odds for it. But, it was a cracking gun and i was happy with the deal. Nice and easy trade.

Thanks for reply , taking rifle to dealer in morn who has a few Berettas that I am interested in , see what he offers p/x , if its well off then i have a couple already expressed interest to my Gun watch advert although I would prefer not to post weapon , see what happens in the morning .
