Decided to build a new ladder trap,as the last 1 was comandeered by 1 of the farmers for his daughters Rabbits

Set too on Monday with Bazooka Joe and the Farmer.Finished it on Tues afternoon and placed it in the field with a call bird in.

It now has 2 more crows and some carpet stapled on for shelter (was just on loose at night for them)

Put 2 skirts on the bottom of the ladder to stop them getting back out..although they are mainly for when it will be used as a Magpie trap.

We also made another ladder that drops onto the original and closes the gaps in the rungs down from 6" to 4" without having to dismantle anything.

The whole trap is made in sections for transporting.

Because there are always Crows hanging around it,we put another trough there today to keep interest alive and we plan to add a larson to the bottom left corner with an outward opening door. This will be sealed from the main trap for ease of extraction of any caught birds.

We also have some larsons running,it was 3 but added 2 more today as we are catching a lot of magpies 12 so far and only started last week.

2 fen traps are also out and they have had 2 squirrels so far after 2 days,so another was set today.

Watch this space :yp:

Larsons are doing really well too.moved this 1 to a new farm last night, and this is what was in it this morning.

The call bird seems to be hiding  these 2 made it 23 in the past fortnight.

We only use the old traps on this farm,as we have had a few damaged in the past.

I used to do a lot of ladder trapping.

For crows, but more so rooks, I found that if you baited the trap at night (so they didn't see you) with bread and other left overs, and left the door open so they could come and go, you end up with a few dozen trained Rooks that are used to hoping in and getting there daily meal, this mob of rooks daily will also bring in more rooks, and soon you've got a huge flock daily.

After a while, close and lock the door, they start looking for another way in, and being the smart so and so's they are, they find the roof entrance, hop in, and get stuck.

The other advantage of doing it this way is Rooks tend to lead other rooks to the trap, my best result was 160 (very tired arms after that) in one night after two weeks baiting, they where getting though 4 loaves of bread a day (spent about 25p per loaf cheap catering ****) when I decided enough was enough!.

  • 4 weeks later...

why do you need the two triangular sections that stick up on the top, would not a flat top do fine?

once birds are inside, if it was flat topped, they would hang upside down and walk to the ladder entrance and escape, having the raised "wings" when they fly up into that bit, they cant figure out how they would need to climb down to get out

Mesh arrived today, so if it stops p1ssing down we might be able to get it finished this weekend.

Looking good fellas :good:

We got a loan of a staple gun and with the farmers compressor it was soooo much easier than hammering in staples

Just as an update, the old larson in the 1st pic has so far caught 31 magpies in that same spot with the same call bird and the farmers son has shot 3 nearby too.

We are now on 80 dead mags(9 of them shot) with 3 more still in use in traps, and 51 Crows/Rooks and Jackdaws with 4 more in use....plus a Weasel in a fen that was put out for whatever killed a Crow callbird and 1 that was caught.Luckily there was another in the other side still alive.

By the way,we also caught a Ferret 3 days later running towards the ladder trap at night. The farmer now has a pet Ferret called Stumpy as it was hiding in a tree stump when we eventually caught her. :D

Also the crows often head for the highest spot, therefore missing the ladder.
