Cranfield
Following a major problem with the new free version of ZoneAlarms Firewall, my hard drive fried on Sunday and my PC would not start (checking out the techie Forums, I am not the only one to have a problem). So, I have been off line since then. Despite the best attentions of my PC guru friend, my machine was pronounced deceased at 11am on Monday. I now have a new, faster, bigger, more powerful machine, at almost half the cost of my original one. Thats what they call real progress. Due to the hard drive being u/s, I lost almost everything on my old PC. It has taken me about 5 hours to set the new machine up and I haven't quite finished yet. I had "backed up" some stuff (photographs, addresses, downloaded programmes etc) on to CD's, but it was about 3 months old, so the newer stuff has disappeared. We should all "back up" stuff, but I wonder how many of us do.

Cranfield, you can probably get most of your data back off that hard drive you know. I realise that "Data Recovery" can be very expensive - but I do know a guy down here in west Wales, who is very good at it - and pretty cheap. E-mail me if you're interested. the Lizard

Topgunners
Sorry Cranfield..... "Back up?" You've lost me there....... Does it involve the cup-holder thingy on my black boxy bit..... ooops. I thought backup was when one of us missed the bird with 2 shots and a colleague shoots it. No. seriously ; Computers cry out for air conditioning ~ high temperatures frazzle files and strike servers. And if you want some recommendations on companies that will recover your files Pm me,CRANFIELD. Dave K
dunganick
There is a program called Ghost which can copy your drives completely, all you need is a 2nd hard disc to record onto. We use a set of removeable discs which can be removed from my dads machine (ghost works over a network as well..... so i can back up my machine without moving) and that was if his machine caught fire or something stupid then the drive has been removed and can then allow him to back up his machine or any others in the house. However.... this does require regular backing up..... which takes a few hrs (if you have as many pictures and music as me) Dont use microsoft restore, its a resource hog, its basically copying every file when you put it onto your machine. In reality these things happen.... i would recomend most of all making a back up of a blank version of your PC with all the essential software installed but no junk. This will be supprisingly useful and save many hours.
