Beretta28g
Was out this morning after Muntjac when some Reds came out of the cover. I have been told that there both Stags and Hinds there but as the stags have cast their antlers now, is there any tips on id-ing them? Cheers

Sharpshooter.123
Look at pictures mate, they don't look all that different but there is a slight diffirence but I wouldnt take the shot if I wasn't 100% sure! atb
Beretta28g
Thats what i did i left em this morning, the only difference i can see is a stags head is slightly broader
Dunkield
They have thicker necks as well, hinds have long thin face If you look at some decent pictures you will see they aren't very similar. Obviously the stag has antlers here but you get the idea
Beretta28g
Cheers Dunkield, very informative. Many thanks
Dunkield
obviously the stag is the second one, but I guess you got that bit I was out on my bike and saw this lot and more the other evening, when I got closer you could see the humps between the ears of the stags, but they may be at different stages at different parts of the country? Beretta28g
Well i have been told that there are both stags and hinds have been seen. Looking at the photos, would confirm my suspicions that what i saw this morning were all hinds. So when i get a look at the stag ill tell you what his headgear is doing. They may be early this year with the mild winter. Cheers
Sharpshooter.123
Not sure why it posted twice the only differences between the two in my opinion are head size, shape and neck thickness, and obviously the meat and two veg Edited April 16, 2012 by Sharpshooter.

Dunkield
Are those pidgons feeding on rape or stubble? :yp: It a shoddy camera picture, but you get one whole point if you can work out where it was taken, there is a massive clue in there somewhere
huffhuff
I'm going with Windsor Great Park! ...and for a bonus point, I think that field is to the right of the 'Long Walk' Edited April 16, 2012 by huffhuff
Beardo
It's Dunkield back garden, what do i win?
scolopax
Generally Reds are in single sex herds, well at leats mature stags keep seperate from the hinds. The hinds will be in a group of mature hinds, followers and calves. Not worth making a mistake at this time of year, I would imagine it is not pleasant gralloching a heavily pregnant hind. And did you know there are 2 Long Walks and 2 copper horses? I didn't until I went for a ride round last week.
dodeer
To be honest don't shoot stags now. Any responsible stalker will wait till there in antler and be able to proffesionally age and decide on which to cull. Thats if your after the long term good of the herd not just shooting everything you see for meat money. Try and find a local stalker who'll show you the ropes. Muggins.
Have a look on the British deer society website. On the section Ecology of deer it shows you some pictures of each species and some pointers in recognising deer. There is a better one somewhere but i can`t remember where it is.
