my friend has just getting his fac and bought a new cz 22 but he is having problems with keeping it zeroed .He zeroed it at 50 yards the day he got it and was shooting fine the next day it was shooting about 2" below target zeroed again .Shot a few rabbits then it seemed to be off again he could get a couple of head shots then hit one in the shoulders checks zero and they where off again. This is happening everytime he takes the gun out can get maybe 6 shots bang on target then 5 or off .He changed scopes thinking it could be them but its just the same he is using winchester subs all of the time .Just wondering if this is usual or not getting he,s starting to think there maybe something up with the gun cheers geoff

Either - Scope up the Swanney or, as Pegasus Bridge said, 'something' is loose.

Mounts, moderator, wood to metal screws - Everything needs to be checked.

You say he changed the scope so its the mounts or the gun.

Usually turns out to be something ever so simple that needs half a turn.

everything is tight but yes i think he does clean the barrel regually do you think this could be the problem. Also i take it this should not be happening him having to rezero all the time . thanks for the replys also when he changed the scope he bought a decent set of mounts so its not scope, mounts or moderator

As said, check everything is tightened up fully and that it's not been cleaned, they only ever need it on rare occasions.

I've had similar issues, I'd get a zero then suddenly it'd move zero, either while shooting or next time I picked up the rifle. I cursed everything, until I eventually realised it to be a parallax issue, even though I'd set the scope to the distance I was shooting at it still wasn't right and not putting my head back in the exact same spot for every shot resulted in problems.

The easiest way to rule that out is to pull your head back from the scope so that you can see a dark circle, line that up evenly round the target before taking your shot, as when it's even it means your head is in the correct position. Try that and if it shoots exactly the same each time then you know it's a parallax issue, and can go from there.

It's unlikely to be the gun or ammo as it's giving repeatable results for a while, hence I'm thinking parallax.

I cleaned my anchütz once and never doing it again!! Accuracy was lost for about 20 "fowling" shots!!! They don't need cleaning, perhaps maybe a wipe in the chamber to get rid of the wax!! I would consider free floating the barrel as this would also cause issues. What I'd do is tell him not to clean it and just go from there, As Bruno22rf said oil in the barrel will make zeroing worse. Only guns I clean is shotgun and now 223 c/f

EDIT: if it's wooden stock. Free floating takes the metal away from wood, when wood gets wet it expands and when drys it retracts so it alters zero, if letting off a few shots in quick succession will heat the wood ever so slightly making it expand, also affecting zero. A mate of mine "vampire" on this forum has had to do his cz 22lr and cz 223 because of zero issues.

I would stop the cleaning it and put a good few down on the range and check for consistency, then give it a good few taps and try it again.

IMO .22's don't need to be bedded or free floating, from memory almost all CZ barrels touch down one side of the stock.

Has someone else had a shot as well, just to rule out the user?

what are peoples opinions on .17hmr? should they be cleaned?

I'd say, don't clean the .22 and only clean the hmr when the edge goes off the accuracy. I once set up my hmr and I was consistently hitting beer bottle tops at 100 yards. Then made the mistake of cleaning the barrel. Took another box of ammo to get it back on form.
