I would always recommend using a dog , quite apart from retreving a dog is half the fun of wildfowling for me. However with care a dog is not always vital.

You need to ensure there are no near by creeks or cover that a duck can be lost in. An open shore line with an onshore wind is ideal.

If you are going to do an evening flight finish while there is still plenty of light to find your duck without a torch. Even if it means losing chances at late birds.

Only take one bird at a time. If you go for a left and right you are unlikely to be able to mark the first bird.

Do not shoot over water too deep to wade in.

With increasing daylight a morning flight may be the best option.

Try and make friends with a mate who has a dog. There may be another gunner shooting near by , After flight do not be too shy to ask if his dog can help if you do lose a bird.

Get your own dog as soon as possible

I would be very wary about using any steel load over 32 gr unless you have a steel proof gun. My 3 inch AYA magnum 1070kgs is not safe to use steel above 32 gr loads. I would at the very least get some tungstun or Bisumth shells as a back up if the duck are over 40 yards or geese about outherwise you will struggle using just 32 gr loads of steel on the foreshore with your present gun.

Rob, If you dont mind travelling just a little further and fancy some inland fowling...Check out the Whittlesey Wildfowlers. They have in my opinion some of the best Widgeon shooting around. If you decide to go for it I`ll be more than happy to show you around.
