TJ91
I have seen a few terriers in the beating line working well and saw a picture of 1 retrieving a duck in a magazine once. My jackrussel always retrieved what she caught but wouldn't retrieve shot feather. Anybody got a terrier that goes shooting with them and retrieves feather? silver pigeon 3
My terrier will pick shot birds/rabbits, but then just wants to eat them , Terriers are not the softest mouthed dogs.
WGD
I've seen a few Border/Lakeland types that will retrieve, how much damage is done I don't know. But I would rather train a gundog than a terrier!!!
vulpicide
I ran the gundog scurry at Scone along with the junior members of the SWDA a few years ago and one guy had a lab that would do nothing for him. I told him my Russell could do better he did'nt beleive me now Meg had never done a scurry but she would retrieve what she was told to so she gave the lab a showing up! She's thirteen next Sunday and she bolted her last FOX in February I've told her she's retired but she's a bit DEAF. She retrieved fur and feather but would also delivef a cigarette lighter from one side of a gully to another and back again.
JDFrain
One of my terriers decided to leave the beating line last year and try to retrieve a sheep, as you can imagine i was not pleased. nearly took its bloody face of. farmer was fine though thank god, hence the terrier doesnt beat anymore JDF

oscarsdad
My border comes beating with me and he is brilliant in the beating line - often finds birds that the spaniels have missed. He is especially good at finding pricked birds, he then dispatches them and he is also nice enough to pluck them as well haha! Once it is dead tho he has no interest in it apart from eating it. Salop Matt
Our Cairn comes beating every season with me and retreives duck from water regular and with ease, not sure how he would cope with goose though ! He cetainatly isnt a spanial and i dont try to make him one either,i just let him do the bits he likes to do ! he also retreives pigeons but spits them out at my feet and appears to spit feathers after to get them out of his mouth but other than that he doesn maul things or bite them, he`s very soft mouthed and will bring pheasant back to. He once bought a bunny back to me but he doesnt get much cance at this. Where he is great being smaller than a spaniel though is when birds are held up in heavy undergrowth such as brambles, hes able to really squeeze through them and does a great job of flushing ! I really need to get him out more this year with the shotgun and work on his blind retreives !
BRAD1927
My 2 JRT's a fantastic at beating as others have said quite often putting the spanials to shame!!! They are more than happy to oblige when it comes to getting into tight brambles etc. As for the retrieve not a hope in hell they will find injured and dead quarry in fur or feather but as far as they are concerned they found it so it belongs to them lol. I also find that my male JRT is very sensative to shotguns and goes nuts at the noise so not really much cop in a hide.

bicykillgaz
Seen a picture a few years back of a guys Staffordshire bull terrier retrieving a pheasant, staffys are very intelligent dogs and easy to train as they love to please there owners, it's also there downfall when nobs get hold of them. Mine are scared of fireworks so haven't dared to try taking them shooting but they are quick learners and I have no doubt they would be capable though, mine have got very good noses and dont seem bothered by brambles when out walking, they also make very good ratters apparently. Mint ratter but also likes cats :s He does all the basics, sit stay heel come back. He's just a little lump of muscle and I know he wouldn't jump the fences or fit under and I cant lift the little sod to get him over. Cracking dogs. Are they and good swimming out of interest? Never seen a staffy in water Edited May 12, 2012 by TJ91

vulpicide
Meg is 13 tomorrow and has been working foxes since she was 8 months, old this litter we could not keep above ground the other 3 in the litter all worked till this year Sparky died 3 weeks ago but Meg /Blompy and Suzie are all still fit(ish) but all would work fur or feather but Meg is the one you can read like a book its not the first time the hounds had marked a hole, if meg said it was negative it was NOT a FOX that was at home. She did not go to ground on rabbits either but she would chase and mark them to ground if you were ferreting she will be sorely missed now that she has retired. She is the mother of Miko the terrier in my avatar we have been breeding these lines for 40 plus years.
archi
My dads old Jack russel came from an old West Norfolk Hunt terriermans bitch which was put to a Cottesmore dog which had some sealyham blood in it I believe. was working well by 12 months, got run over and broke is leg early in his life but it never affected him. Would stay all day to charlie until dug too and was a sensible bayer as he often used to work evry Wednesady & Saturnday with the West Norfolk. Was an honest dog and I dont think we ever dug him to rabbits either. He would retrieve pheasants with a soft mouth if needed but was only a couple of times as he was a pure fox dog. He was often used if a younger terrier had been used and wasnt too keen archi Edited May 15, 2012 by archi
