New tyres

I need to replace the front tyres on my car. They are 235/40/18 Continentals. Do I stick with Contis or can somebody recommend another manufacturer. Or would you recommend buying budget?

The Contis are £175 each btw! Budget tyres quoted at £66 each. :hmm:

You don't say what model car it is, but if it's one that merits the existing tyres, it's your funeral if you go cheap. On the other hand, you've saved £218 towards the cost of the coffin! :o

Completely agree! I bought cheaper tyres for my last car, although they were still £100 per corner they were awful. I put continentals back on and you can really feel the difference and it really gives you more confidence. The contis seemed quite a soft compound though and only lasted about 12k miles. However, i'd buy them again as they had suberb grip and great braking performance. They are, after all, the only thing between you and the road so in my opinion well worth the investment.

Best Regards, Phil

unlike the doom mongers there will be a middle ground tyre that may even be an improvement over the contis, and as ever its shop about I always used to find michelins were about as good as it got on my last car and with costco doing them reasonably price wise at that time it was worth it for how long they lasted.

Go and ask your local tyre fitters. They will recommend a mind range tyre at half the price that meets the safety standards and last just as long. I have a Ford Galaxy and the tyres were around £180 each. They have to be a W rating. My local tyre fitter recommended a mind range tyre that is good in the wet, W rating, lasts longer and half the price. Tyres are not as hard these days due to road noise restrictions. The Continental tyres I had on lasted 13000 miles. The mid range ones I have on the front have now done almost 18000 miles with life left in them.

So go ask the professionals. :good:

Cor, didn't realise they were that fast!

It's an Audi A4 170bhp S line.

I have rang the experts who want to sell me what they've got, Kumho's, Uniroyals, Avon etc. when I have asked for a mid range tyre. I would ideally like tyres somewhere between the budget & Continentals that were recommended.

:thanks:

 no they are heavy

Just out of interest as I genuinely don't know. I have got this feeling that you know about the load index. Are you saying that the weight is such so that coupled with the max speed possible, it is necessary to up the ante with regards to the speed rating?

I ask because my nephew is (OK, his wife) expecting twins in addition to the rest of the tribe and this is looking a likely choice of vehicle.

Sorry I honestly don't know. I only go by the technical spect of the car and advice from my local tyre fitter. I wanted to get a lower rating because I do not drive fast but the tyre fitter would not sell them to me and explained the high rating was because of the weight of the vehicle.

Bearing in mind that I also honestly don't know about any peculiarities of this particular model. I can, sort of, see that what I said earlier may make sense but I can give no reason for saying it. The vehicle weight is normally catered for by the load index for the tyre. It may just be beneficial to get a second opinion regarding the necessity to use a 168mph (W) rated tyre on that particular car. It may just save you a good few bob, but I stand ready and willing to be corrected as, as said, I know not.

I just had to replace same size tyre on my mondeo (235/40/18) - I can't afford to go £180 a pop on tyres so went for the budget Nexen, £93. Had them on for about 10000 and still OK (apart from the one I had to replace due to puncture...). If you can afford conti, get 'em - if you can't, then get the budget one!

If you google the tyre rating for my Galaxy it always comes up that it must be V or W rating.

After much deliberation (google searching) I opted for Avon zz5s. The reviews were mainly good. I might lose a few mpg but the missus dervs it most of the time. I just drive it like I stole it!

My local garage are fitting them tomorrow for £240 the pair. :good:

Avon's are good tyres. (I know one of their test drivers and he assures me of that :D)

Tyres are about to come supplied with labels, so comparing them (at least on 3 performance criteria) will be a lot easier.

Steer (no pun intended) of the budget stuff and you'll be fine. They're called 'ditch finders' or 'Nippon Nevergrips' for a reason :D

Nexen, Toyo and GT Radial are fairly good 'mid range' tyres. Nankang aren't too bad either, and they're even cheaper.

The tyres in this video were comparable to Nankang My link

Here's an interesting one on partworns. All tyres fitted on this car were premium, only rears werw at 2mm and the fronts were new.
