Sea fishing advice

I need a bit of advice please.

I'm booked on a fishing trip in a few weeks and I need a full set up, looking on ebay there seem,s to be some good deals to be had on rod & reel combo's (pair of rods & reels for 60ish quid)

Question is what are they like? cheap **** or decent enough for what I need them for? I don't want to spend a fortune but on the other hand I don't want to be laughed off the boat with my toy kit.

What are your thoughts?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Check with the skipper. If he is any good, he will have full setups available to use and should be ready to help with any tackle problems.

Spot on MM. Around here all skippers rent out the gear. About £10 per day plus you pay for any tackle you loose. (Weights, hooks, etc).

Do it that way and you know you have the right gear.

You won't get a decent pair of rods and reels, lines and end tackle for £60.

Learnt the hard way myself, bought some cheap second hand real and other gear, first trip out the real broke and strugled for the rest of the trip.

Most skippers will have gear you cn use / hire, which might not be in tip top condition but will do the job. If you then decide you like sea fishing then its time to start looking at what you need.

Boat rods come in different classes 20lb, 30lb, 50lb etc and reels to match the class of rods. There have been some good pieces of kit coming up on PW recently, worth keeping a eye out on the sales section.

If you know any others going on the boat they might lend you some stuff as well, tends to be like PW a lot of times whare they will help others out when theres a good crew going out.

What may be a good tip is if this is your first trip out, try not to get by the exhaust pipe or take egg butties, though on some boats position on boat is drawn or may even be rotated during the trip (when and if theres chance).

I went to Littlehampton a few weeks back with the old boys from my local & can say I'm now hooked

We caught plenty of sea bream and pouting (pain in the *****!) and a whacking great smoothhound.

I was borrowing the Peltmans gear and the general consensus on the boat was I'd be better off throwing it all over the side :lol: Thing is Pelty's coming with us this time, hence the need for my own gear.

The bream were delish
