ok i just been asked well i offered to shoot some foxes for someone looking for help. il be using a 12 bore. what would the best shot to use on them? i only recently got my licence but been shooting clays for a while so any advise would be great. info i have so far is there is between 5-7 foxes couple big dog foxes a big dog fox is being seen daylight hours every day the ladies problem is that her barn burnt down in feb this year and her pigs are due to start farrowing in the open arks from next week. last year they took new born piglets from the arks and she moved them to the barn which was safer. now she got no barn she is worried so i been in contact and saying i will help if i can . so any tips and advise would be great. im also going to tackle her rat problem aswell i want my terrier to start on rats so will be a good job for her and a few trips with the air gun. cheers in advance matty

firstly have you shot a fox before and second would you be 100% ok about it, with a rifle you can be anything from 100 - 400 yards depending on the rifle and experience but with a shotgun you would be about 30 yards tops, if your gun takes 3 inch magnum then get some of them in BB or bigger for a humane kill, if using standard carts then get the biggest shot you can and get close.

thanks for the reply . i have been told they are very easy to bait in as they try through the day and the night when all chooks locked up they try digging in they have 1 that comes to the patio window so from her advise there easy to get them to come in on almost clockwork basis. i only shot ferals and rats with air gun. and i would not hesatate to shoot a fox at close range . i have only slit a foxes throat and cut a few brushes off as i go lamping with a friend who got 2 lurchers. had a few foxes with them dogs . well im going up the gun shop tomorrow to get some carts so see how it goes .

tougher than you think foxes.

long carts and bigger shot for sure.

don't be tempted to take them at the longer range you would take a bird IMO

I have seen a fox run down the line on a rough shoot at about 30-35yds. 4 people hit it, one square in the chest, rolled it, it got back up and carried on running.

everyone was using game cartridges.

we found it a good 75 yds away

Basically use a reasonable cartridge and keep shot range down. I've shot most of mine with 6 game loads and they are fine sub 30 yards if you keep the shot at the front end. If you go out just for foxes then 3's take a lot of beating in a 40 gram plus load

Just about mirrors my experiences,3's or 1's preferable to BBs for me.Normally prefer a rifle for fox but shotgun the best for some circumstances, certainly highly effective if you don't go past sensible range.

:good: As far as I can remember all the foxes I've shot were with game loads, some as close as 10 yds, with the exception of a couple of fox drives where I specifically chose 4's simply because I had some left over from Hare drives. But even these were just about within spitting distance.Let them get in real close.

At ten yards it dont matter what you shoot them with! As the range get further it depends on pattern and energy, if your gun throws good with BB use them if it dont use something smaller. Personally 46grms of no.1 is my best all round but 63 grm of BB can sure drop them past 30yds

Why on earth have you slit a foxes throat ??? there are a lot quicker and more humane ways to dispatch a fox. :hmm:

Dog went after a 2nd fox and hadn't killed 1st fox outright. I only had a knife on me at time so rather let it die a slow death it died in about 1min of me arriving I dont like to see a slow death quicker the better imo.

Looks like I'm going to her land checked as got friend with rifle who's offered. i forgot to mention though this was many years ago when it was actully leagle to hunt with hounds that i killed a fox with a knife as i was only acting responsable and finishing the job in the most humane way possible at the time

If you only had a knife,a knife to the atlas joint would have been instantanious :hmm:
