Rob G
A few years ago i owned one,it was a 2.4 diesel it had done 245,000 miles and never missed a beat. The only thing that let it down was the body work.A builder owned it before me so it was a bit battered it went every where i wanted to go no problem
tosspot
what top gear said is true in my experience had an old one for dogging about in, it became my main vehicle for a while never cost me a penny other than fuel and an oil change or two in nearly three years but beware of lift kits, they fall over easy as i found out to my cost when i wrote mine off stick some MT's on & a couple of sacks of grain in the back and it'll go where you point it recommended
longjohn
what is the fuel consumption like in comparison with other 4x4s?
webber
Ive been messing with 4x4s for 30+ years. The Toyota Hilux is an excellent off road utility vehicle. Extremely reliable, virtually bomb proof, and excellent off road. Jerremy Clarkson couldnt break one, that says something! The ride is what I would describe as agricultural, and creature comforts limited to a heater. If I were looking for a shooting vehicle, Hilux would be top of the list, but I wouldnt want one as my main / only vehicle. Over the years I have become acustomed to the comforts offered by the Shogun, and more recently a P38 Range Rover, but I also have the luxury of a quad bike. webber
caplock
jfdi! the cheap ones will always be a rattly shed (like mine) but will do all the landys can whenever you want them to and not when the moon is in the right quarter of the landrover heaven!! after owning both a series landy and a disco it is safe to say that my driveway will never rust!! Mungler
had an old one for dogging about in I would assume that you had the Truckman top then to save embarassment.

plinker
i have had two of them still got one they are the dogs danglies, mega reliable excellent off road and have far less gayness than a lot of the jappos also excellent for towing and tax deductable if you are selfemployed ie they are a true commercial vehicle in the eyes of the tax man, if you get an older one pre 98 they are non turbo and are a bit sluggish for everyday use so go for a td r reg onwards better ride as well as they ditched the cart springs on the front in the year before that. plinker
Foxer
my grandad bought one brandnew in the 1980's and kept it right up untill 2003 he only got rid of it as he has a bad leg and couldnt get in and out of the hilux very well because of the height of it, he sold it to a 'travler' down the road who is still driving around in it today so they will last but they just rust a fair bit especially around the rear wheel arches
biakalblaster
i drive a 1995 toyota 4runner - shares same chassis as hilux, infact import version of 4runner called HiluxSurf. the 4runner has torsion bar from suspension and coil springs at back, different to hilux the only other big difference for age-age comparision is the 4runner as 3 litre TD engine, not 2.4 it has solid estate back end, not truckman. great vehicle, good fun offroad, i have done 20k miles in it, 160k miles on clock. do all servicing and repairs myself, got it through last 2 mots straight off. makes good shooting vehicle. fitted with mud tyres, 2" suspension lift got a 4runner rather than hilux, due to estate body style, and bigger engine. RossM
Well i've always had Landrovers, Currently a 2001 Discovery TD5 but have also just acquired a very smart 2001 Hilux Single Cab. Its raised 4" and has massive BFG tyres. Its invisible. Fantastic machine. Needs a bit of weight in the back to enable grip off-road and also to aid comfort on the road. Its a 2.4 Turbo model too with torsion bars on front instead of leaf springs. Goes pretty damp quick for me. comfortable upto 75 on the motorway!! Get one. You'll never look back.
