.243 fox load

Recommended Posts

55g Sierra Ballistic tip, sat on 40 grains of Hodgdon 4895. Not much for the bullet weight, but it still gives enough energy and flat shooting to 300 yards, but without wasting powder and wearing out the barrel. The only thing is I haven't yet got to try it on any foxes, though I'm confident it will be very destructive.

Remington Accutip 75 grain.....out the box and in the fox.....

For £21.00 a box they hold up very well....If you have to shot foxes @ 300 yards then you need a quieter pair of boots!

I have used alsorts over the years. from 55 grn varmint bullets to 100 partitions. The cleanest killing seem to be the stuff in about 70grn like nosler b/tip or 75 grn v-max. The worst are the heavier tougher deer bullets. Been doing more with the lighter 55's recently but my prefference is cetainly for the 75 v-max though i just cant seem to get them now, yet to try the new 87 v-max (on paper it sounds good)

powders are H4895, varget, N160, H4350 depending on bullet weight and what the gun seems to like. To get the best out of the .243 you need to push it a bit, otherwise you might as well run a .223

The knowledge (correct spelling) is all about your land, however the further out the shot the more factors come in to play as I am sure you are aware.

Doing the maths seems to have taken over rather than doing the leg work

As long as you are confident with the shot (I was, had shot steel plates and milk jugs 3 out of 3 with consecutive shots at 300 yards, so I knew how much to dial up and that the rifle could easily do it.) As long as you have a safe backstop and the shot was safe (fox was in the middle of a field midway up a large hill.) Then I see no problems with taking the shot, there was no wind I might add and I probably wouldn't have taken the shot if there had been a good wind, as I haven't yet got a wind meter for calculating precise windage, I'd rather leave it be than injure it. It is very satisfying making a kill at that distance though but I wont make a habit of it and don't plan on doing it that far again.

Looks like i will be starting with a 75 gn vmax . Is there much difference in drop with the 75 and 80's as opposed to the fast55 grainers

Keeping the gun still will make more differance than worrying about the trajectory of these bullet weights. I use 85gr Sierra Spitzers, 45gr Vit 160, cci primer,OAL 2.660 av 3100fps, this is my Munty load but the few fox's I have had to shoot with it ( don't shoot many as they like em round here as 'they don't hunt em anymore' :hmm: ) But the 30 or so I have dispatched have all dropped instantly. :good:

the idea of the 55 grn aint trajectory its faster fragmentation. with ragards drop it depends on range but you wont miss a fox this side of 250yds with either. 75 grn or heavier even will kick butt on windages over the 55 though

Although no shot should be taken with a fast 55 that wouldn't with a steady away 100grn bullet, its the better option for lamping and in stock fields IMO. though i am a newish convert to the upsides of the 55's myself

Dont use that caliber but do use the 65gr Vmax in a smaller case, gets the job done perfectly at about 3400 fps. 55gr NBTs are also fine, expansion is not as fast so smaller exit wounds usually. 68gr match bullets ( Berger/Barts etc) are my first choice at this time of year when there is a lot of tall grass etc about.
