Sorry but that is shocking if true. I have the same problem with this that I had a few weeks back when I posted about the police contacting a school when a child applied. It is NOTHING to do with anyone else and certainly nothing to do with an applicants employer. In fact, unless you have given them permission to do so then contacting anyone and telling them they you have made an application then the police are almost certainly breaking the law relating to data protection.

I’ve just filled in my form.

I had to enter details of employer.

I have every expectation that they will contact my employer – otherwise why would they ask for the details.

I would expect the conversation to go like this;

FAO – Hi, I’m the police fireaems person, I just want to confirm that Fred Smith works there as he’s just applied for shotgun cert.

HR – Yes He does.

FAO – and how long has he worked there

HR – about 5 years

FAO – And can you just confirm his home address.

HR – Yes, It’s 23 Acacia Avenue.

FAO – Thanks, lastly, can you let me know if there’s anything on his employment record that you think I should know about.

HR – nothing at all.

FAO – Great, thanks very much. Don’t forget, this is all confidential. Have a nice day. Bye.

HR – Bye.

I guess it might be a bit different, they may not mention firearms and just say it’s the police doing a general police check, they may not ask about any problems on the employment history.

I guess it depends on the rest of the details on form and how the conversation develops.

But, I would expect that every bit of information in my form be double checked.

Especially as most that information can be checked with a quick google and phonecall.

Well, the good news is that it's all sorted :good: ,no apology from the firearms dept, because as they say(which I can understand & agree with)when any type of issue/report or complaint is received, they MUST investigate it  , but they do agree with us that the manager & HR dept involved were a little over zealous in their actions . My son, last Friday, requested an interview with the HR dept, expained the stress caused by them & when she realised just how much inconvienience she had caused to all concerned, she admitted she didn't know anything about the procedure that had to be adhered to by the FAO in order to ensure all was correct. She has verbally apologised to my son <_< . The strange thing about it all is that when my son arrived at work this morning, he was informed by his work colleagues that both ladies, (the manager & the HR manager) have both gone on sick leave.I expect they're having A BAD DAY  .

surely the FEO when they rang should have clarified the detail and explained the situation! Perhaps ACPO need to write a guidance document for HR depts as to what is what!

Now the cat is out of the bag perhaps he should get pro active and arrange a have a go session for his colleagues...

They ask in case they ever need to find you. If they know where you work it is easier to get hold of you. Also, of course, it's one more piece of information that makes it that little bit more difficult to invent a false ID for nefarius purposes. A lie is one thing to pull off; a complicated lie is quite another.

The form does not ask anywhere for permission to contact your employer. It merely asks who your employer is. That is not an implied permission to start asking questions and relasing information to people. If you compare it with the part where they ask for details of your doctor, there is a specific authority for you to sign giving permission to ask him/her about your medical history.

They don't contact employers or HR depts as a matter of course when someone applies for a ticket

Don't see why the should really your employer may know you well or not at all bit like your GP! Also I would think a fair % are self employed farmers etc or not at all retired etc how would it with MP's!
