Wildfowler
What makes it so interesting is that following it though you can actually see how it all works. I can't imagine designing a firing mechanism - but you make it all seem simple! The engineering is beautiful. Many thanks for your comments! Wildfowler
I spent a bit of time yesterday starting to make the gun crutch. Nothing spectacular at the moment but it'll get better! This is 6mm 316 stainless (not the easiest to bend!) I found a few bit in a chandlers yesterday too... I got the breaching rope And a few Stainless fittings to make the fail safe (in-case the breaching rope fails for whatever reason)

Wildfowler
I got all the tooling made to chamber the barrel and got the barrel mounted up ready to machine so tomorrow will be another one of those 'all or nothing' moments... Wildfowler
Like i put in my last post, today was one of those 'all or nothing' days as i set about screw cutting and cambering the punt gun... First of all i set it up using the spindle support, support in the wall and the fixed steady Then I faced off the weld. As you can see it good good penetration and there are no gaps in it so i'm pretty happy that it will be OK... Then i started boring it out... I cut the minor diameter for the thread and the step for the cartridge head
Wildfowler
Next was to start cutting the thread. I used the ainjest attachment again which is great for internal threads as you obviously cant see when you'r approaching a shoulder! This is the finished thread
Wildfowler
Then i machined the chamber. This was the worst part of the whole process as the boring bar has to be so long it vibrated badly. I sped up the spindle speed, slowed it down, took varying depths of cut at various feed rates and nothing seemed to help much so i got it as good as i could and went for it. I left 0.2mm on diameter so there was plenty to emery out to give a smooth finish. I took the tip out of the boring bar and wrapped the emery around it and used it to smooth out the vibration marks (which worked well) Due to the thread profile the tool doesn't go all the way to the bottom so I had to machine the thread away on the cartridge end of the breach plug to make sure it will sit tight up against the cartridge. This is the whole thing assembled. I will cut flats on the breach plug tomorrow or Monday to make it easier to get in and out.
Animal Mother
Bloody marvelous, keep up the good work. How about a couple of pegs so you can spin it on and nip it up.
Wildfowler
How about a couple of pegs so you can spin it on and nip it up. Pegs in the face will get in the way as I've designed it so the action sits hard up against the breach plug to avoid excess wear on the thread... I could possible put pegs coming out from the side but they would be very short, again, due to the action. The idea behind flats is so i can get a spanner laser cut out to suit to ensure i can get it undone after a shot (there will be lots of crud blow back)
Wildfowler
A quick video of the breach plug... not too exciting but thought id put it up out of interest. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWeupedpDCI&feature=youtu.be Edited August 3, 2013 by Wildfowler

Wildfowler
I put the flats on the breach plug today.
Wildfowler
Then I mounted the barrel up on the mill and clocked down the flats on the breach plug to ensure i got the trunions and hing properly oriented. I supported the muzzle end on a workmate and my good lady wife assisted moving it whilst i machined it. I machined flats to locate the trunions and the hinge and drilled and taped a securing hole and pin hole for the hinge

Wildfowler
Next was a drive over to my dads again so i can use his welder again... I set up the trunions on a workmate and clamped them in place.
Wildfowler
Here they are welded on and the hard skin of the weld ground off. I'll file the weld smooth tomorrow and get it looking nice again!

Thanks for the comments! I'm starting to get pretty twitchy to be honest... i really want to get it done now so i've got some time to test it before the season gets into full flow! la bala
if you got good penetration it wont matter to much, but dont file to much strength off wf.
Wildfowler
I'm pretty confident I got good penetration as I welded it on full whack but I did think twice about going back over it... Once I've filed it back and I can see what it looks like I might still do that... I certainly don't intend on cutting it fine as I don't fancy it coming back and greeting me! Animal Mother
Brilliant. Good call on the flats rather than pegs. Where are you going to fit the scope?
Mac
Great work fellow!! but what about cartridge extraction? it kind of defeats the purpose of a breech-loader if you have to ram something down the muzzle end!!
