ferguson_tom
No matter how much i try to convince myself I love the Terrano it is beginning to do my head in on the long commute everyday. So I have been looking around and come across the BMW 330 touring around 51 plate for not a lot more money than the Terrano and seriously considering getting rid of it. Just wondering if anyone has any views on these BMW, I am hoping the fuel consumption is better than the terrano if driven normally so above 30mpg. Are running costs that bad on BMWs for spares etc. I am looking at ones around 70-80000 mile mark, Thanks, Tom
sandspider
Had you considered the BMW 330D? Better fuel consumption, similar performance I think. If you do a lot of miles, would be worth the extra cost of the diesel in the first place.
ferguson_tom
I have but not got the money to buy a diesel and to be honest i am used to the fuel costs now its more the comfort and speed i am interested in. Also i can get it converted to gas for not a lot which will make it even more economical than the 330d and still be under the diesel buying price. al4x
and prone to every sensor failure going if you convert to gas, the man speaks sense with the diesel option even if you went for a higher mileage version its a better idea if you do a sensible mileage
gixer1
You will not get a 330 to be as economical as a 330d - trust me on this one! You would be much better paying the little extra to get the 330d, in 8 years of bmw ownership (both petrol and diesel) I have never had to buy anything other than service items. The diesels are a far far better car than the equivelant petrol. I would recommend them to anyone although dealership service is pretty rubbish. Rupert
Then buy a 320d
PhilR
I've had a few BMW's in the last few years including a 728i, 320D SE touring, 320D coupe and a 320i (2.2l) SE convertible. They've all been very reliable and if the X5 had been a capable off road tool I've have bought one of those instead of the Discovery. At one time the 320D engine was raved about, then things started to go wrong with it, swirl flaps being ingesting into the engine, causing at worst total engine failure. Luckily I got rid of my two before it became evident. I think the same problem occurred to some extent with the 330D engine too. Not impressed with my local BMW dealership, but the one I used in Birmingham, I had an office there, was first class. Best to seek out a decent independent guy, I used one in Stoke Mandeville who was pretty good. If you're looking at a 330 auto then I think you'll be lucky to see an average of 30mpg unless you drive like the local vicar. My 728 was in the low twenties and the 320i convertible over 59k miles was 29.7mpg.
alexf
Hi Tom, ive got a 320i Touring on an 02 plate, had it about 18 months and had it serviced at BMW specialist who has been fantastic. In the time i have had it I have replaced the radiator which is a common fault as the sides bow on them and split and had to replace the rear caliper. Love the car and want a 5 series next as for MPG getting 37 on a motorway run and around 32 around town. Hope this helps anything else just pm me also the bmw forums are good bimmerforum I think its called.
ferguson_tom
Thanks for the replies everyone I have got an eye on a 330 manual with low miles at a local garage and just seeing if we can come to a deal for the terrano. With regards to fuel consumption the diesel would make more sense but to I do fancy the fun of a petrol car again as have not had one for a few years. I think i will stay away from the gas coversion though. Also on the long commute to work i do drive like a very old man as realised quite quickly that i dont get there any faster really so may as well save a bit on fuel. Will see how it goes with the garage then make sure SWMBO is happy.
Medic1281
If you want fun then get the 330d and get it remapped, you'll be amazed! Good economy when driving normal but huge amount of power and torque for more spirited driving! I've recently got a golf gtd, and had her remapped. Now pushing just over 200bhp and pulls like a train. Get over 55 mpg on average but can get above 70 driving like a saint!

No need to remap a 330d - you get 230bhp and 500nm as standard! 0-60 about 6 seconds (a mitibishi lancer evo only does that in 5. odd!) and the Beemer will tramp onto a good 155+mph! I can honestly say the beemer is one of the best handling cars I've driven - even in the wet the DTC keeps it going in the right direction, and thats comparing it to a 4WD turbo charged Lancer Evo 8 (which I think is also one of the best handling cars you can buy) Regards, Gixer
harris2006
E46 330d aren't 230bhp and don't buy one for a fun car either but they are good engines with only a coupe of common problems. 330 petrol is an excellent engine although not the most economical they will do 35mpg on a decent run. ajm1979
Ive had BM's for years, currently got a 330cd auto and it is brilliant will easily do 40+mpg on my daily commute which is mix of twist country roads and a bit of dual carriageway sitting at around 80mph. I have had a 330 manual and a Z4 with the 3.0 engine in whilst it is possible to get over 30mpg on a run quite easily on mixed driving i normally got 28-29 average

I was refering to the E91....don't think the E46 is far off the 230 though and the last E463.0d i drove was still a fast good handling car....and it would be rare to get the 3.0i to 35mpg especially if heavy footed.
