colin lad
well just had call from my feo and the variation is all good and my license will be in the post tomorrow. so time to look for a decent 2nd outfit have looked on gunstar and gun trader and seen a few so my question is what would you guys recommend out of cz 527 american tikka t3 light hw60 tikka m595 i think it was 595 bruno fox oh and a sako thanks colin Edited September 19, 2012 by colin lad
al4x
ok Colin in the order of preference it would be Sako, T3, m595, cz and on from there but as ever its down to budget. There is this that looks quite reasonable bearing in mind it has scope and mod included but is miles away and fairly old. http://www.gunwatch.co.uk/guns/3725-Sako-for-sale The difficult thing in this situation is being patient! Stuteleys have a classic deluxe remi 700 cheap but not sure I like the description! The things to watch are make sure its threaded or the costs start to mount up and if you can find the whole package so much the better. Its a good time to go shopping and try as many as possible and get an idea for them and how heavy they are if you are going to be carrying them about. Once good to go then we'll see if we can find you one at slightly more than 25 yards If I spot anything about I'll let you know
colin lad
thanks al4x did see a tikka t3 light on gunstar at £575 looked nice but this is going to be a budget gun, i have found a nice cz for £300 so shall take a look at that it in as new condition but not screw cut, but have been quoted £48 for that i have mounts and a scope just need to look at mods to get an idea how much they are colin oh and you doing yourself an injustice there it was nearer 35 yards Edited September 20, 2012 by colin lad
Olliesims
A mod for a .22 centrefire is around the £200-250 price mark new, second hand what I've seen is £100-

Mods are nearer to the £200 mark unless you can find a second hand one so the costs start to mount up, that cost for screwcutting is pretty reasonable but still starts to add up. and would probably still add up to something like this:- http://www.guntrader.co.uk/Guns-For-Sale/CZ_Rifle_527-American_For-Sale_120428164838004 but if the one you look at is mint may well be worth just going for it! Kes
try and find one which has been used as target rifle - usually they are tuned down for ranges - I agree with al4X about order of preference but cz is still an Ok gun - I have one. Gimlet
Don't overlook cheaper private sales. I was deliberating over which new .223 to buy and struggling to find a secondhand one I liked when I was offered a BSA CF2 in .222. It must be 25 years old, at least. The stock finish was looking its age but everything else was in excellent condition. I was particularly impressed with the action. Its very slick and stands up well in the company of quality modern rifles like Mannlichers and Sakos. The guy selling it had owned it for many years, using it for occasional foxing and was selling it because he wanted a deer/fox crossover calibre and the FEO wouldn't let him keep both. Its a 24" heavy barrelled varminter and it is a big heavy rifle. But if you can put up with that (and I prefer it, its barrel weight makes it very stable off sticks) then by God does it shoot! Its giving just the same performance as Simon6ppc's Sako, and with factory ammo. And I'm really not exaggerating, it will shoot the 9 circle out of a card at 200 yds. All for £250. An absolute bargain. I don't have a mod on it because its long enough, I don't want to risk up setting the harmonics by threading it and in any case a .222 isn't that loud. I shoot rabbits with it and if by making use of the range available the noise doesn't seem to be a handicap. If I was buying a new triple now I'd go for a Sako or a Ruger varminter- if I had the money. But keep an open mind. Cheap is not always nasty. I wish they still made CF2s. Gimlet
Have a good look at the bore and the chamber especially if the rifle's getting on a bit. Take a .22 bore snake and give it a pull if its dirty. Ideally use a bore light. I'm not that good at seeing bore wear so I usually get a second opinion from someone I trust. And look carefully at the chamber. Rust spots are a sign of general poor maintenance which would make me pause. I was looking for a new .308 recently. I wanted a varminter heavy barrel. I looked at the CZ laminate and wasn't too impressed. The fore-end wasn't parallel to the barrel and was very close to touching at the tip. I ended up ordering a Ruger VT which was a lovely piece of kit. The wooden stocked CZ 527s I looked at I thought were nice rifles though not that cheap any more. If the one you're looking at is a pretty one with light use I it should make a fine rifle. Don't be afraid to drive a hard bargain though. Its a buyers market. Hope you find what you want. bicykillgaz
Kexby country store near me had a tikka m595 .222 with a Swarovski 6x42 on it for £450 apparently it belonged to an old keeper who had retired, it looked like it had lived in his truck and been knocked about a bit but he assured me it shot well, can't remember if it was screw cut. Hope its what you want. You shouldn't have any trouble getting mounts for a CZ. They do have a high bolt throw. My Parker Hale is t6he same rather was- its gone now.
