This dog fox killed 12 poults the night before. I arrived by the pen at ten to 8 next morning and after ten minutes of calling with Acme whistle, shot him as he came creeping through the laurels towards me. Shot with Hull 42gm BB.

Seven squirrels called and shot with AL391 same morning. All called with Acme button whistle with sharp little chatter calls. Number 7 was shot walking back to the car.

Good work, but I can't figure out how to use acme whistles for squirrels. How do you do it exactly?

I just sit in likely areas and give short little sharp blows, like an agitated squirrel. They come within minutes to see what it is. Shot over twenty in past two weeks with it.

This one mate, Acme 504 fox button whistle. I discovered this worked by mistake really when calling for foxes, the squirrels seem to love it! I just sit in areas I know squirrels are and do short sharp blows, making a sort of chitter chatter noise. I do a few long squeals too like a young squirrel in pain and I have had squirrels literally running at me to the call. Best one was a squirrel that came creeping down the tree i was sat against and I looked up to see him eyeball to eyeball!! Needless to say he didnt ever make that mistake again when an ounce of 6s hit him

Sorry but I don't know what you mean exactly with "chitter chatter noise". I've practiced with the call and I don't think I'm doing it properly. Is there a video on how to do it anywhere, or even just a sound recording of what the call should sound like when you're getting it right?

Sorry if I'm being a bit thick.

:) no sorry, just my Devonshire way of describing things. I put the call in my mouth and breath rapidly, creating a series of short sounds that are chatter like. I then do a four second squeal like a young squirrel in distress. Just keep the initial blows of the call short, like when a squirrel barks at you from the tree tops. If you need anymore advice, let me know

Sorry but I don't think I'm getting it right. I've tried doing that and it doesn't sound anything like a squirrel to me. I really need a video or a sound recording to know when I'm getting it right.

Do you reckon this could be done with a wam call, and what is the best time of day do you reckon for a drey poke ?

Yes I think a Wam would preform just as good. We drey poke feb march and April when they are breeding so they are more likely to be home in their nests and also get the young ones before they do damage. As for time of any, anytime after 10-11 so they have fed and are back in their dreys resting up.
