Good to see the first mention of our long beaked friends. I never have much success round here until after Halloween and now always start my pursuit for woodcock on the first Saturday in November. This year it falls on the 3rd. Its always round 10 days after the full moon though when they arrive in numbers so this year Saturday the 10th will/should be the first good day. I would be expecting 2-3 that day. Positive thinking.

I always see woodcock every year on lough Erne while fishing the mayfly. They roost on the islands and fly out to farmland on the shores at night to feed.I rose one from the same area on two consecutive days on an island I was camping on this year. I searched for a long time to try and find the nest but was unable to. I suspect the bird ran some way before flushing to avoid giving away the nest position.
