Mungler
What you want is a second hand Beretta multichoke over and under - that's about the long and the short of it.

Highlander
Forget the make for the moment and tell what you want to use the gun for i.e. clay bustin', bird shooting (game, wildfowl, pigeons etc) rabbits, her indoors or whatever. You've discounted side by side so o/u or semi? !2 bore or 16/20 etc. What's it to be?

Game (Pheasent, partridge) rough shooting (Pigeon, rabbit etc) wildfowl (Geese, duck) and occationally for dusting the odd clay or 2. pin
You might find a dinged 686 onyx for that money if you look around.
Mungler
I got a 1980's Beretta Silver pigeon 12g o/u multichoke (with full set of chokes) for that amount from a dealer earlier this year. The gun is used and the barrels need reblacking but it's still a bomb proof top gun I will never sell and I still shoot fine with it - it is now my field gun. Highlander
OK forget the semis then, not welcome on game shoots. But you're gonna need something that'll take wildfowling loads (possibly steel shot 3 1/2 mag cartridges) so it's going to have to be a bit more than a standard game gun (too light) and maybe you'll want chromed barrels. Pre owned is probably your best bet as you'll get a better quality gun for the money. Go for one of the most popular makes and you can't go far wrong although on second thoughts if you're gonna use it for field/rough shooting and wildfowling then Beretta is probably better than Browning as they stand more abuse. If possible get a multi choke and you'll have a good all round gun. For £500 don't expect the crown jewels (maybe not even a Beretta) and buy from someone reputable or have it checked out (THINK...your life may depend upon it).
