Cranfield
It seems a very sensible idea nowadays to "chip" your dog. Is there one database for all chip systems, or is there a number of them ? If there is more than one, which is the biggest (and best) ? MC
HI Cranfield, Merlin is microchipped and from what I believe there is several companies who supply the chips but they are all held on one database, which is called "Backhome" or similar. I watched a program recently about dog theft and the only way to prove ownership of a dog is by DNA, so if you are going to the vet for your microchip then it might be worth asking about this. Apparently the scumbags who steal the dogs have a scanner and they locate the chip and remove it.
new to the flock
Over here it is all on one big data base. It is usually recommended that with the chipping you run some form of visual ID as well, either tattooing the ear or flank.....I like the flank as you can use a pen and make it large....or freeze branding the hip or shoulder, these stand right out and work well as long as it is placed where the dog has color....the freeze brand grows back in white. pavman
my cats and dogs are all chipped with Identi chips http://ww1.identichip.co.uk/ I can vouch it works, the vets scan and find the owner no probs well worth the money about £30 each
al4x
It is well worth it, ours are weirdly enough the chip was inserted in the scruff of the neck and now is half way down one the side on one of them. You can feel it just under the skin
lurcherboy
All 4 on identi chips here too but remember they can cut them out relatively easy. I can feel the chips in my lurchers. Ear tattoos are popular with some types of dog and are cheap as the inserts but not every owner likes the markings. They tend to suit dogs with semi-pricked ears. In all cases lookout for your curs LB
tenbears10
My spaniel is chipped with Petlog I think you have to have them chipped for the pet passport if you are taking your dog abroad.
