escortmagnum999
evening folks. iv joined a walked up shoot this year and iv found that my 12 bore is heavy on a long days walking. The shoot terrain is rough to say the least, and iv been thinking about converting to a 20 bore. Cartridge price isnt a huge problem as i will only fire 500 a season tops. I'll have around £700 to spend on a 20 bore so can anybody recommend me a gun? Any advice will be grand, cheers

utectok
Just changed to a 20 bore myself quite pleased with it. Range is the same as a 12 bore with 28gm 6s but I do find that you have to be a wee bit more careful about shot placement (1/4&1/2 choke but seems to pattern a wee bit tighter on the patern plate than the 12 bore)

welshwarrior
I have a 687S for the 80s great gun nice and light and handles very well. My wife had a medalist 20 bore was a bit heavier that smoothed our the recoil for her. Both good guns but different price ranges
kyska
I'm a avid 20 convertist, you do need to a little more accurate, but not by much, my 20b patterns better than any 12b we've patterned.
Gutty Boots
If it's just the weight that bothers you, why not try a 12 bore side by side instead. You would be able to pick up a very respectable gun for your budget, no need (or danger) with different size shells & more comfortable to carry broken over your arm. aldivalloch
How heavy is your 12 bore, escortmagnum999? And how much of a weight reduction are you aiming to achieve? Set yourself a target and then have a look at some guns that fit the bill. I note you say you'd only use about 500 cartridges per season. Well, the difference in cost between 500 12 bore and 500 20 bore cartridges of equal quality is significant (to me, anyway!). As has been suggested, why not look for a light 12 bore side-by-side? I used to have an AYA 25 boxlock which weighed almost exactly 6lbs, was an easy carry, and performed particularly well with modest choking and Eley Impax cartridges (1oz of no.6 shot). I have to come clean and say I'm no fan of the 20 bore. I bought one some twelve years ago to start my son off, and of course couldn't resist the temptation to have a go with it. I give it a fair trial, but never got on with it. If you want a light gun and don't mind condemning yourself to more expensive cartridges, why not try a 16 bore? My ideal, classic walking-up gun would be a good-quality 16 bore side-by-side loaded with thirteen-sixteenths of no.5 or no.6 shot. You should be able to get one with 26" or 28" barrels, weighing a smidgin under 6lbs, and you'd be surprised at what it would be capable of. A light, lively fast-handling gun with open chokes is very flattering to the average shooter.
snarepeg
Go the full hog, 28 guage and reload your own, Browning light hunter and still feel fresh at end of the day. john
shaun4860
I notice your from northumberland, i am too. Where would you recommend i look for one? Weldon gunroom? bywell shooting ground? Either to be honest, although in your price range I think Weldon will have the better selection, but as they are only 5 minutes apart it makes sense to visit both In fact if you ever fancy meeting up at Bywell I will bring mine along so you can have a go, Edited November 13, 2012 by shaun4860
