roadkill
Can any one offer some advice on boarding the loft in a new build? Problems I have is the insulation is a mile high there are no weight bearing walls inside the house... I only want to do a small area to store the xmas tree suit cases and the odd family pics and belongings...
al4x
you either remove insulation or build a platform on legs. If the weight is negligible spread the weight well and make it so you can reach everything when you open the loft hatch Edited November 16, 2012 by al4x
stubby
either squash the insulation down, or remove some as already mentioned, I removed ours and added it around the edges, just board the middle area
dcliff
Build a floating platform on joist hangers. We did it in my mates house to bridge about 12inch of insulation. You might need to do some clever shuffling about of the insulation to negotiate the work.

kingnewport
just place sum boards ova the insulation and spread the weight. if theres that much inso it'll take the weight. just dont stand on it!
lakeside1000
simply pack up the existing ceiling joists with long lengths of timber until you are at the height of the insulation, then board out with chipboard flooring at right angles to the joists, special loft flooring chipboard with jointed edges are cheap enough in packs at b and q as are the joist timbers, remember do not be tempted to nail anything as the vibration will loosen ceiling plaster fillings in screw heads etc, just screw it all together for max strength. dont forget to wear a mask and goggles is you have fibreglass insulation or you will suffer, best of luck, ex property developer from france, now retired thank god, regards alan. Fisheruk
If it is a new house it probably has a roof of gang nailed trussed rafters. If that is the case you can screw some horizontal bearers above the top of the insulation; to the side of each truss and then screw the decking across the new bearers. No point in removing the insulation. It is there to save you energy.
