What do people think of these??

Sent my dad to get some steel cartridges and ended up getting the wrong ones. Came home with these, 36g 4 I think it is. He is taking them

Back see if he can swap and get some steels.

But was just wondering out of curiosity what people think of these. Would you use them on high pheasants etc with being a big shot size and weight. Also why is the brass so tall?

Thanks, Dave

I've heard mixed results this year on the VIP's. I've used them for a few years, and they have been a great cartridge. But when going to get some at the midland game fair. Over heard a few people saying the powder is different this year, it doesnt burn as well, also problems with the primers sinking.

All I ever use are vip for pigeon crows pheasant ect and have had no problems with them good hard hitting fast shells. Me and a mate go to scotland time to time inland and use them on decoyed geese and they stop them with out a problem. I highly rate the vip alongside the black golds but the 4's shot is ok on high pheasant I used 4's a couple of times brought them down no problem with very little damage to the birds.

I used 28g No 6 Lead on Pheasants last season in my B525 20b. Did the job well but i think i prefered the Hull Cartridge Sterling Game if im honest. Probably all in the mind!!

Hull Cartridge have now discontinued the "Sterling Game" load. I use a 20 bore for most of my game shooting. I'm told the Sterling Game cartridge has been replaced by the "High Pheasant Extreme" which is precisely the same thing only re-branded. I tried a box today and they work/shoot the same as Sterling Game of which I have about 600 of the old models left. :good: The only difference is the box ( new branding) and I think i'm right in saying the High Pheasant Extreme is not available in a PDP/Photo degradable wad, only fibre.

36gr of 4s is a bit heavy for most pheasants which are typically shot below 30 yards. 30gr or 32gr would be more than enough. Shot size is fine.

I'd agree 36g of No4's is a heck of a load for pheasant and I don't shoot in Devon unfortunately :ermm: I would consider this sort of load ideal for hares, ideal even.

I like the VIP cartridge range though, very good

Hello Winchester/Dave.

Shot alot of Eley Vip's usally 32g 5 shot pdp wads for high pheasents, they were really good still got a few. Took em up to scotland, perthshire on high pheasents last year, they are the old packaging green and white boxes, green cases, gold writing. The bad news is again the new version i have not shot yet, in the blackish 25 boxes, but a few of my friends this season, recon they are not as good as the old one's. I know Eley keep changing things due to the new spanish link up they have. cannot comment on the new version did not shoot any, but the old ones, are really good but to expensive for the likes of me to blast at pigeons for sure. Maybe some of the more competent shots on here, could give their views on the the new version Eley Vip game cartridges. I would be interested to read your veiws. Shooting pigeon with Victory starlight 32g 6 shot since they ba--sed up the clear pigeon cartridge. Hope the same has not happened to Eley VIP.
