We have a family run syindicate and a few others, my father and brother run the majority of it as i now live away from the area. So they say i cant use the auto and thats it. Which is fair enough as gun safty comes first. Im not saying that auto arnt safe but its far easier to tell that a o/u or a sxs is safe. After a bit more thought i have a gun for every occasion and can use all to the same standard,so i will keep what i have and stick at it. Thanks for the sugestions but i suppose i allready knew the answer.

no gun is safe if its pointed at you, so long as you dont swing an auto round like its a skipping rope its as safe as any other.

A sxs or o/u is far easier to tell if safe by people who dont know, they can see the cartriges are removed, but to the untrained eye is hard to tell if the auto is clear.

I understand that but so long as you prove yourself to be competent in handling a gun, theres no reason why people should view it as unsafe, but as billy said, if its visual clarification you are after put a flag in the auto!

You have a nice collection of guns as it is so just enjoy having them and shooting with them! :good:

As above, At the moment i have 3 shotguns,

12b 26" sx3 for the marsh 3&1/2" steel proof,CANT use on the phesant

12b 28" browning 425 2&3/4" not steel proof for phesant clays and general use.CANT use on the marsh

20b 28" yildiz sxs 3" steel proof for walked up and flushing.NOT suitable for the marsh

What i want is one gun for all purposes,a light sturdy reliable gun that can withstand any conditions i through at it.

Was thinking of a browning 12b 28" 525 3" light hunter and then gettting it professionaly coated in duracoat.

Do you guys have any opinions or do you use o/u's on the marsh, dont want a dedicated 9lb wildfowling gun for the phesant either. The magority of shooting is wildfowling.

Cheers and look forward to your thoughts

I shoot 2 OU both beretta 686s one in 12b for the foreshore and geese pretty battered but does the job. And a 20b for walked up and driven shooting does for me. I used to shoot everything with the 12b

Chrome lined bores so would hope not a big issue on these anymore

I like to polish mine with the phosphor brone brush on a battery drill not pitting or corrosion in my barrels:-).mines pre chrome lined I think.

Im going to keep what I have and out of season treat my browning 12b to a reblue and have the wood done.

As already mentioned, one gun to cover all areas is going to be a compromise. If you are convinced you need to reduce your inventory then I would suggest keeping the SX3 for the marshes and look to trade the other two for something light enough to carry all day with enough clout to comfortably deal with the quarry at ranges you expect to be shooting. There are people on here better placed to point out specifics but would something like a 12 gauge SBS be any good to keep the weight down? Given a sensible selection of shells you should be able to cover most situations. You might want to invest in a shoulder pad if heavy loads and extreme pheasants are your thing but lighter loads for walked up ought to be a doddle.

why does everybody need monsters for fowling, all my fowling was done on anglesey and southport marshes, used a baikel o/u 23/4 chambers 1 1/2 oz homeloaded no1,s b4 steel came in,got my share of fowl with it.

But can you fit 1 1/2oz of steel shot in a short cartridge ? That's why you need a longer chamber.
