starting problems

Went to a proper garage today to get it tested and they say its the battery, the battery is ok at 12.87v goes up to 14.3 on idle. but it is rated at 830A and only giving out 691A. Dont know what these numbers mean but been told to replace battery.

The CCA is rated in Amps in your battery's case 830 which is the current to spin the starter motor. Yours is only producing 691 Amps which is not sufficient to do the job in cold weather. The same problem I had in a previous post.

I think you said this battery was new so I'd be inclined to take it back to the supplier and get it replaced, most batteries these days come with several years warranty.

Might be a good time to remind people that buying a "heavy duty" battery is not allways a wise move.If your alternator is not designed to provide the additional power needed to keep the battery charged fully then it will not reach its full potential and will provide less power and not last as long as a standard battery would.

Test starter motor current draw using amp clamp and potential differance from battery live to starter live also battery earth to starter body using volt meter do this when cranking. Battery test results seem reasonable enough , what are you trying to start the ark royal ? Also voltage across battery while cranking , is it going below 9.5 volts ?

Battery is brand new, had it checked at local autoparts shop and at halfords both say it is spot on and up to the job.

Went to a proper garage today to get it tested and they say its the battery, the battery is ok at 12.87v goes up to 14.3 on idle.

Thanx for all the help, battery going back on Monday. Can't believe the first 2 checks failed to spot fault.

Your second post answered your third!
