adam f
Yes, another which gun thread! I've current got a Hatsan Escort which I bought as an experiment to see if I like them. I do, in fact it's my cheapest and favourite gun. However I always thought I'd upgrade if I got on with it. So I could keep it.... But if I upgrade what to? I do like the Benelli M2 but put off a bit my it being mechanically operated and having a bit more recoil than a gas one. I do like the Beretta 391 Urika... Don't really like the SX3 or the Maxus from what I've seen? What do you lot say? Don't tell me what you would like to own, or what your mate has, but if you actually have one or have used one I'd be interested in your view? Thanks! BerettaSV10
Had a benelli crio (not quite a M2) and never had a problem with recoil, maybe with heavy cartridges there's a difference in the felt recoil.
Albert 888
Got a 26" sx3 the grey version, didnt like it to start with. But now i love it. Its easy to strip and clean doesnt got rusty unlike the black version. Only problems ive had with it is wont cycle the batch of Barnargie 36g 70mm 4's i have at home, the brass expands under presure and is difficult to remove from the chamber. All other cartridges cycle a treat 65mm-89mm. Shoots just as good as my other guns. If i could change it i would go for the maxus as i want the speedload option. HDAV
Have a look at the Franchi FAST...... http://www.gunmart.net/gun_review/franchi_fast_semi_auto_shotgun/ available in synthetic or the 712 Raptor http://www.shootinguk.co.uk/guns/shotguns/126646/Franchi_Raptor_shotgun_review.html
fenboy
You will not go wrong with a beretta 391 I love mine. It will shoot anything from 24-50 grams without issue and I think I may have had two jams in around 3 years use and one of those was when something got lodged in the bolt. There is a reason why beretta is the biggest selling auto in the world.
humperdingle
Can't really fault my Beretta 391 for the past 3 years or so I've had it... Selling it now, though, as I'm moving on to a Beretta 686 for clays. If I were to buy another semi auto, it would be something similar. adam f
Yes I know - that is the point! I very may well keep it, but being a gun tart I'm wondering if I'll beat it by 'upgrading'?? To be fair it does everything I ask of it and only owes me £250! To be fair it does everything I ask of it and only owes me £250! Been there, and had the T shirt only the other way around by downgrading to the escort. Its the gun that gets used the most, though the others have there purpose. If the escort serves you well and is a good one keep it, If you upgrade you still may pull the escort out of the cabinate first.

Bloke
I regularly shoot (clays) with both a Browning 525 o/u or an inertia-driven Benelli Supersport semi-auto, alongside a friend who also has a Supersport, but has been for the last couple of months shooting his son's gas-driven Browning Maxus semi-auto. All great guns, but recoil and cartridge preferences are unique to each. The o/u will obviously shoot any standard cartridge weight you put in the chamber, and obviously recoils the most, but is easy to strip and clean. The Maxus recoils the least, but is much more fussy about cartridge loads, at least this one is. It really doesn't like anything under 28gm, when he shoots 24gm, it still fails to cycle on about 4 cartridges per 25 box, and seems the usual mucky semi-auto as cleaning goes. It is only about 3 months old, but has had about 2.5K cartridges through it, so it should be settling in. The Benelli recoil is between the two, as I don't usually shoot a gas recoil gun I don't really notice the difference between the Maxus and the Supersport, but it feels definitely a lot less than my o/u to me. It will cycle nearly anything, I often shoot 21gm with it in practice and only get about 1 in 50 cartridges failing to cycle. It is by far the easiest to strip and clean of the three guns. At the end of it all, you pays your money and you takes your choice, as they say. Try as many as you can out and decide for yourself, I have had other shooters ask to try the Benelli and say they think the recoil feels worse than their o/u, not sure how that is, but everyone is different, if I shoot 250 cartridges in the Benelli, I can't really feel it, but after about 150 in the o/u, my dodgy shoulder is starting to ache a bit, but it is still my favourite of the two - go figure, as our american cousins say! All the best in your choice. Edited December 17, 2012 by Bloke
Fib new
Did the same thing: bought an old semi-auto browning last year just to see how I got on with one... Loved it, I now use it for almost all my shooting except pheasant or partridge. For wildfowling, pigeon or crow-shooting there's no better gun for me. Went to look at some new semi's last weekend, and compared a benelli and a browning inertia action. Don't know why, but didn't like the benelli but loved the new browning A5. Although it's rather expensive, this is going to be the new gun for next season. A shame that they only start selling the browning by march comming year! the big shot
Have you considered a synthetic beretta A300 outlander and keeping the hatsan escort both for less than a new beretta 391 urika.

adam f
forget the rest and buy the best. you cant beat the benelli m2 and i am talking through experience and i have tried them all Why is it the best? I agree it looks lovely but what's it going to be like with a 42g load when I'm sat on the foreshore in the rain?
Fib new
One of the things why I was looking for à benelli is because it is inertia operated -so is the browning a5 by the way. Very good for use on the foreshore or in the marshes...
BellySlater
was in the same position myself, really got on "OK" with my escort, cycled well and dropped most of the birds I pointed at. Recently traded up to the Maxus and I couldn't be happier, it patterns so much better (across all chokes) and fits me perfect. Probably a confidence thing but the Maxus has a much higher kill rate and I reach for it every time. Try one for size and feel, SX3 is similar and cheaper but my view is to go with "what feels right". There is a notable difference between shooting the escort and the "next level up" (imo) Cheers, Mr Slater
