Over 100 in 2012

2012 was a good year for me and I have many good memories from the field.

Unfortunately not all of them can be caught on camera.

Early September 2012 a couple of days after a small rape field had been cut on one of my permissions whilst walking around I noticed the pigeons were hitting the end of the field hard. After a couple of hours sat watching their movements I went home and prepared all my decoying equipment ready for the next day.

I have shot up at this particular permission for a long time and have noticed over the years that the pigeons don’t seem to feed anywhere on that particular farm until late morning.

By 10 o’clock I made a suitable hide against a hedge, set out an L shaped decoy pattern with a dozen deeks, assembled the rotary ready for when I had the first couple in the bag.

By half past 11 I hadn’t even seen a pigeon and I was contemplating packing up, until one solitary bird committed to the pattern. With 1 in the bag I quickly attached him to the rotary and concealed myself in the hide.

A couple of pigeons and another hour later the pigeons were moving about in the sky and I could see them in the distance, and only the odd bird was enticed by the pattern.

Birds were slowly becoming more frequent, and the bag gradually grew to 10 or 15. Pleased with the way things were unfolding I sat tight and remained hopeful.

Just after 1 o’clock the game changed drastically, the pigeons were committing to the pattern thick and fast. This continued for approximately 3 hours.

The final bag was 120 odd pigeons, of which I picked 115.

I was using my old Franchi 520 hunter 3 shot auto, and my poor little terrier who wasn’t designed for retrieving pigeons (but he tries really hard) was absolutely knackered!!!

This was a truly magical day and one which I won’t be forgetting in a long long time.
