will_gleave
Had a call from one of the farmers on one of my permissions, he said he had been out walking the dogs with his grandchildren and found 2 rabbits next to each other with what he said were cuts round their necks, also there has been a large decline in the number of pheasants on the land, on the way back to the farm house about 200 yards away from the house they found what he thinks to be a snare tied to the fence. He's kept it to show me next time im up but he seemed very upset on the phone, and asked if I’d come up more regular. Now this year I’ve already asked people to leave the land as they shouldn’t be on it including a fellow who I found near to a large warren with a whippet telling me there are no rabbits about. My question is, how do I go about catching/deterring the poachers if there are any and what do I do if I catch them. Thanks.
robbiep
Being active on the land yourself. Speaking to any other people (if there are any) living nearby. Ensuring that any footpath signs are in good condition and visible (anyone well away is then highly suspect). Warning signs that poaching is a crime, the land is being watched, and that police will be called. If need be, trail cams - though that does effectively mean hanging a large amount of money where it can be stolen. Oh ... and enforcement action on anyone that is caught. robbiep
Oh, I will say this, even though I expect it to be unpopular If you aren't there much, and you can't commit because of the other permissions you have (you said 'one of my permissions' and he's 'asking if you can come up more regular' ) then you might want to think whether you have too much land Hogging the land doesn't help the farmer (as it doesn't get shot/looked after), doesn't help you (never there = bad reputation), and doesn't help other shooters who are looking for some land to shoot over. bedwards1966
There isn't a great deal you can do. Being there as much as possible can help to keep them away if they don't want to be caught, but then some don't always seem bothered. If you do find any, be very careful about approaching them. Some of these people are very nasty and it could be dangerous, even more so if they have a firearm. Phone the police and try to keep them in sight, and note any vehicle details. If you have a video camera these can be handy, and just wait for the police - but don't get your hopes up, if they are anything like round here you'll all be at home having tea the next day before they actually turn up. And even if poachers do get caught, being told not to do it again may not stop them.

Always tricky this situation but as above, be very cautious or DON'T approach anyone where you think the situation may be difficult, and get the boys in Blue big time and fast if they have any form of firearm, they will respond then! subsonicnat
Found a load of snares, WIRE on the foot paths People work their dogs, CUT them off the fence. Just keep checking the area, any more KEEP Cutting them, they will soon get the maessage, they take time and money: As for belting them, remember your licence, it would be a great excuse to take your guns away, so no more of this sort of talk, its all pie in the sky..
