Working from home help and advice please

Due to the fact that work for plumbers has practically dried up at the moment I am considering looking into some of the work from home schemes.

I realise that some of the schemes that you see advertised are scams and hope I have enough common sense to avoid them.

However there must be some genuine ones about. I am not looking at making mega money , just enough to enable me to pay a few bills and put food on the table.

Do any PW members know of any such schemes ? Any info would be helpful, links to web sites etc.

Also do or have any members undertaken work from these schemes ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Smiler, the general view is that unless it is some kind of call centre type work ( except that you dial in remotely). most of the schemes are a rip off. I would advise caution. I know it's not what you want to hear but it is the truth.

In general, there is no work about as you know yourself. So the chances of there being any substance behind any of these schemes is pretty remote. I know of somebody who spent the weeks before Christmas delivering parcels in their own car for 40p a parcel. Thats 100 parcels to earn £40 less petrol and wear and tear on the car. Not great

avoid any offers that want money up front or are commission only both mean you are taking all the risks. Personally if you are a plumber get out and get a few thousand business cards printed and get them in every letterbox you can find locally and you may be very surprised what comes in.

Buy stuff from local car boot sales and put it on Ebay-wont make you rich but with experience you can make a few bob.We do this as a family sometimes-we all go out with £20 each and buy then whoever makes the most money on reselling gets a prize-silly but it teaches you and your kids the value of money.Last time out I bought a childs "Relentless Suzuki" sweatshirt for £1 that went on the bay for £32.

can I just say I have been self employed for the last 23 yrs mainly I have worked on a commission other than when I had ltd status. I think I have done ok, to me PAYE gives little job protection and far smaller pay packets. Investment in stock etc on the promise of sales is a whole different matter, paying large amounts to training companies on the non binding promise of work also a bad plan- I am thinking here of the well publicised scams surrounding HGV and driving instructor courses here ( admittedly they wont all be bad). I have lost thousands over the years as clients go bust or pull a fast one but I have made many, many thousands more than I ever could have working for someone else.
