Greenhunter
If you make any alterations to the barrel length you will be unable to sell the gun without having it re-proofed. Altering the barrel in any way automatically makes it out of proof and its illegal to sell an out of proof gun. You can make any alterations to the stock as , usually, this is part of the fitting process. I don't actually know if there's a legal limit to overall length, however, its certainly more than has been suggested. For instance, a semi- auto with a 30" barrel and a 15" stock is already over 40" before the action is taken into account. Hope this helps. GH A gun only becomes out of proof if you structurally weaken the barrels. Shortening them doesn't do this, it just makes them shorter. Hope that helps
walshie
Overall length can't be less than 40".
Andy H
Pump's and auto's must be 40" overall but sxs ,o/u ,bolt action .lever action single barrel there is no minimum aol stated just the barrel must be 24" to be a shotgun. It is only out of proof if you do something which substantially reduces it in substance or strength (I think that's how it's worded). Chopping a barrel doesn't do that. I suppose it might if it were a damascus barrel or something though. J.

So does that mean that it would be entirely legal to make a 'long-barrelled pistol' out of a SxS .410 ? Say a 24 inch barrel, and a pistol grip ?
