gixer1
Range rover - although most need an auto box between 80-100k Stay away from a disco three of that age unless you have endless piles of dosh! Great motors when going but they are money pits. Regards, Gixer
Dave1087
Discos & rang rover are both money pits but I would have a disco 3 I have had a rang rover and they are poo I have got a disco 4 now
Dr_evil
Be l322 at that age. Much better than p38 so as long as sound could be good. If nothing else it will be comfy
apache
Love my D3. Most are very reliable, there's just a lot of them about. No-one comes online to talk about how reliable their car is.
Dr_evil
D3 is probably easier to fix too
86inch
Get the x5 By virtue of the fact that the OP is a shooter, and asking for info about Land Rovers, i'm guessing he's set his heart on a "real" 4x4 i.e one thats not going to a) look like a tart's **** and B) actually be able to provide him with some mud slogging ability. The X5 doesn't fall into either of these catgories IMHO...

Beretta06
I have just ordered a new Freelander 2 for delivery in March. Previously I had a Defender but my road miles now outstrip my offroad ones. With a set of decent AT tyres it will do all the off road shooting I want, but me far more comfy for longer on road stuff. I know not on your original list, but worth a look. Offroad they are good too :-)
al4x
At the price and age of vehicle you are looking at I'd say the same as gixer steer well clear unless you have a lot set aside for maintenance. Dodeer is on the button with comparables but look around well before you spend a chunk on a moneypit

The X5 doesn't fall into either of these catgories IMHO... You are correct in what you say but in that age/price bracket an X5 would probably be a good enough choice. Ours spends far more time in the car wash than off road (heaven forbid) but an older version fitted with the appropriate tyres would be perfectly capable of dealing with any normal excursion a shooter deals with. I've shot pigeon for 30+ years and never felt I needed a 4x4 to manage the off road grass verges where I park a normal car. Find a fair example of an X5 and at least it won't need expensive repairs as a routine hazard of ownership.
al4x
Little story on x5's we had one on a let day this year it didn't last the day. Followed a ranger and hilux through a slight flood and drowned in the middle, they simply aren't built for off roading it was also **** in mud
viking
i do have my heart set one one of the 2, idealy a range rover, it would be a one owner with FSH, iv got a couple of quid but not that id want to waste it on a car thats always breaking down or going wrong. if it did go wrong my brother is a mechanic with his own garage so labour costd wouldnt be a big issue. what sort of things are lightly to go wrong with the 2?? Dr_evil
disco 3 have heard of cranks breaking, plenty of electrics on them and the early ones aren't overly great plus will have been thrashed a bit by now l322 is better than a P38, the TDV8 engine being lovely, interior will outclass disco too unless you get a full HSE spec, tbh I'm not sure which is the lesser of two evils…….the range rover will cost a lot to fix as will the disco parts wise but you get a nicer space in the RR to wait for the AA truck to turn up…. Catweazle
Off-road die-hards moan about the l322 because it doesn't have the solid axles like the P38, but in the real world it doesn't make much difference, they're still capable for such a heavy car. Dr_evil
Good when they're working, don't work very often. Too many shoddy electrics to let it work properly, ECU failures all over the shop thanks to leaky gutters etc, immobiliser problems etc etc Buy a classic if you want an offroader, buy an L322 or newer if you want something flash that works! Just skip the P38 and let them go extinct 2.5 DSE engine isn't exactly great either, not enough power for the car from what I've read

I have the 4.6 V8, even that isn't exactly a powerhouse at 225bhp. Air suspension is good if you regularly rebuild the compressor ( every 6 months ), it's dead easy to plug a PC into it and give yourself whatever ride height you like, Dump the Dunlop airbags and fit Arnotts. Mine has Disco2 16" wheels with BFG muds. I love it when it runs but it's too unreliable for an only car, currently it's dead due to failed crank position sensor, which the idiots at solihull positioned to get covered in road muck. The engine management system is pants, the car management system is pants, the immobiliser system is pants ( it picks up wireless networks and flattens the battery overnight ), the driving position and comfort are great and it will plough through mud all day with the right tyres fitted, due to automatic centre diff locking and 4 wheel traction control. As an example of Landrover design, to change the front to rear brake pipe official Landrover procedure is to remove the whole body from the chassis ! That would be OK if the pipe was stainless, but it's just normal painted steel. Overall, give it a miss unless you are a fan of working underneath cars. Exactly the reasons I wouldn't buy one overly complex I've got a Series 3 V8 with an EFI engine in it which is perfect power to weight for a LR, also got a 300tdi EDC disco which is about the same as a RRC, just the right amount of nonsense

Dr_evil
Tbh mate, if you want something nicer than a fender see if you can find a tomb raider or something like a fire and ice If not and you're stuck with landrover rather than going for the above you could go for an Amazon or tbh the option I'd look at would be putting a P38 interior into it. I've got an RRC one in my series and I'll slowly be modding it so it's fully creature comforted starting with a working heater!
