Mangled99
I have been advised to ask you stock finishing experts which die to use. I have an old Miroku Mk70 that I want to strip the stock and refinish with oil. I really like the dark stocks that I have seen around that are finished with a satin / matt finish. The wood is not too bad and I reckon oiling it will make it stand out but I know I will have to stain it with something before I start to oil it. Can any of you guru's recommend a stain as to put on before the Napier London gunstock finish kit that I am planning on using. Ideally I would like to make it as dark as this picture that I found on the internet.

welshwarrior
Post the start colour picture because then you can get better advice we know where you want to be but not where your coming from. Makes a difference. Edited February 3, 2013 by welshwarrior
sitsinhedges
It's 'dye' and my local gunshop used to use powdered alkanet root. Think I've still got some up my shed in a tissue.
Mangled99
I've not stripped the stock yet as I was going to get all the stuff together first. I have read that alkanet makes the stocks go red that was why I was asking about which 'dye' to use or if anyone uses a water based type dye that can be bought. The root itself is red so it probably does. I just mixed a bit up with some stock oil to repair some minor damage.

I might get a little to try on a small piece of walnut and have experiment with as I am looking for that dark brown matt / satin finish
welshwarrior
I use Alkenet root oil to bring out the grain and give a subtle dark red colour if I have very pale stock I use a dark brown dye water based to give the wood colour first. The stock oil with darken the finished product as well.

welshwarrior
Something like Colouron is what I use but there's loads. Make sure it's water not oil based otherwise it can mess with your oil finish
