grimey121uk
I have a 1 piece cleaning rod for the HMR and the relevant sized cotton patches, for some strange reason I cant get a patch in from the chamber end yet I can fit the same sized patches from the muzzle end. Am i doing something wrong? Any ideas?

cockercas
You don't want to be cleaning from muzzle end, you will damage the crown. Reggiegun Not strictly true. But any grit on the patch is better damaging the throat than the crown.

Alanl50
You can make the patch smaller for use by stabbing it off centre instead of in the middle of the patch. try that Alan
dadioles
I really wouldn't want to do this without a bore guide. I am glad to hear that you are taking cleaning seriously though and not playing games with a bore snake.
grimey121uk
Could someone recommend a bore guide? I don't use a bore snake but I hear lots of people do, what's wrong with them? Edited March 24, 2013 by grimey121uk

kent
Could someone recommend a bore guide? I don't use a bore snake but I hear lots of people do, what's wrong with them? depends on the gun, with a rim fire generally you buy one specific to the gun in question. Nothing wrong with good bore snakes if used correctly, same as with rod cleaning you can get it very wrong using the wrong stuff the wrong way
Gimlet
I've never found a brand of pre-cut patches that fit a .17 bore, or a .22 for that matter. The materials is too thick and soft to my mind. I always have to spike them off-centre or trim them down. And then I'm not convinced that the brass of the jag isn't contacting the bore. The best way I've found is to get a decent pair off scissors and cut down your own patches from a roll of four-by-two. Alanl50
Bore guides are available from Rimfire Magic, "Possum hollow" one's I think about £20-22.00 delivered just ring and tell them your rifle make, excellent service from them. Alan I use the Rifle craft ones and they are fine, I dont think I could be asssssedd to cut the things at the price they are for the quantity you get! coyotemaster
This may be one area I save a bit of money, but my old t-shirts are relegated to patch material. +++1 for a bore guide and hopefully a decent quality rod. I think you can do a lot of damage by improper cleaning especially from the muzzle end.
