English archer
Logun is a 5 month old lab. Yesterday when getting off the sofa, he favoured his left rear leg for a few minutes, today after been in his crate for half an hour, he again favoured this leg. This looks like cramp or similar, and he soon walks it off. He walks are 3-4 miles per day. Is this the start of hip problems? Or am I over walking him? WGD
Over walking without a shadow of a doubt and I hope I am wrong but this can cause hip problems, stiff back end is an indicator. At 5 months, 10 - 15 minutes free running is plenty; 20 minutes if on lead or play training. Give him a few days rest and see how he goes. English archer
As well as his walk, he is constantly play fighting with our border collie puppy. It looks like I'm just over walking him.
WGD
Pups need to rest mate, that's when they do their growing. Separate in them into cages if they won't settle of their own accord.

The Ghost
I think puppy food is a great problem in any dog, it is like high octane fuel and makes your pup have more energy than it can safely get rid of. Not alot we can do about it as it is what it needs when growing so fast, you can drain a dogs energy by putting mental pressure on it. If you can get it to stay for longer periods of time, leave food til you say eat, look for bits of food training it's nose, find an object by scent or even ring a bell with it's paw this will drain unwanted energy. It is nice to be out with your puppy but try to think of games you can play with him, this will also bring about a very strong bond. Dogs like children benifit from the time you spend with them, it is the best investment you can make. Greymaster
The danger of over walking is also putting to much muscle on flexible bones, deforming them, and setting yourself up for dysplasia later on as the muscle will drag the growing hip ball joint into an elongated position. ditchman
definatly over walking......that is criminal 3-4 miles everyday...his bones are still growing....yes he needs exersise not that much, ...and food with calcium in it and raw eggs with the egg shells when a dog is fully formed and you start to work him for the first season he will get a limp now and again so dont worry....put good in and you will get good out ! feed him what the body needs dosnt matter if he looks a little well covered, when you start to work him that will come off in a week or less...i like to see just a little rib on the dog.. im not a dog breeder or a proffesianal....ive just had working dogs for 30 years plus, i use mine for picking up and rough shooting, and when they come indoors they behave themselves good luck
jeffd
Go and see your Vet and I can only agree with all the other posts far to much for 5 month old pup you should be looking at around 25 to 30 mins at a time a little more occaisionally if the pup is off lead on grass. Yes they have loads of energy and will play with the other dogs this is natural but its up to the owner to enforce some rest time.
