Gimlet
Try it again at dawn. You'll have to set up while its still dark so be careful on approach in case they're already out.
ace_of_hearts
Just thought i would update this thread. I have still not had much luck with the air rifle, but after going out with a few guys on here (Thanks Alex and Colin ) I have applied for my FAC and have my interview next week. I also met up with the farmer yesterday just to check over my boundaries on the map and he showed me round 8 new meadows that he said i can shoot over too The rabbits in the meadows look perfect for the air rifle too, as they have not been shot before and there is plenty of cover to stalk up to them. Should have some nice varied shooting over the summer now.
Twistedsanity
One more for plotting up and being patient for half hour , don't ever shoot the scout bunny that appears first but wait another 20 mins and he will let his chums know the coast is clear then you will have multiple targets , you can shoot 3 or 4 within a few feet of each other and the rest don't spook easily If you have a decent quiet air rifle
ace_of_hearts
Air rifle wise I have a HW95, which is fairly quiet but it a bit of a pain getting multiple shots off being a break barrel. Just called back the FAO and i have my meeting on Tuesday afternoon. He also went through some topics with me so looks like i have some swatting up to do
mrikirkby
I am in the same boat as you hundreds of the little ****s and no fac only shotgun and air rifle. Had a few with the shotguns but not much luck with air rifle !
Gimlet
...don't ever shoot the scout bunny that appears first... +1 Nor the one, when you've spooked a group, which hangs back on the edge of cover sitting bolt upright staring you out after the rest have scarpered . Its the same individual. He's easy to shoot. Don't. When he relaxes - which can take an eternity - hops back out and starts feeding again the others will soon join him. If possible try and identify this scout and avoid shooting him full stop. A dead scout makes a very nervous colony.

missmoreandmaster
With your air rifle set up a one man popup hide they are the best for this type of ambush shooting IMO giving total all round consealment and shower proof, get 25-30 yds down wind sit still DONOT smoke and shoot the second to emerge this way you don't need expensive nightvision or lamps . I go out at first light and late evening into last light, Every day for 2 weeks. You will clear quiet a few this way but mostly they will be very reluctent to come out of the warren and then any disease will spred also reducing the numbers. In the meantime apply for your fac buy your hmr17 . One happy farmer, One happy shooter with new gun and one new pigeon permission Regards Martin
ace_of_hearts
Just had the FAC interview which went great The FEO seemed very happy with my attitude and security and he said i should have the paperwork through within the month This afternoon i am going to spend a few hours down the new meadows as the farmer mentioned there were tons of rabbits about at the moment. What a great day!

ace_of_hearts
Scott and I went to one of the new permissions today where the rabbits are not quite as wary, and cleared up 7 with the air rifle in a couple of hours (See sporting pictures) Rabbit and leek pie for dinner tomorrow B)
Gimlet
Hmm are rabbits really that intelligent? I think so, yes. I've long been convinced that rabbits are far more intelligent than they're given credit for. They certainly have a great capacity to learn. I also think they pass on what they learn to their offspring, that is to say the youngsters learn by example. So if you educate a particular population to be exceptionally wary and difficult to shoot by carelessness or over-shooting, the next generation will inherit that waryness. Same with lamp-shyness. ace_of_hearts
Another update, got a call from the FAO and my land has been cleared and I should be receiving my FAC by the end of the week I have also realised that I am too poor for the HMR I want at the moment, so today I put down a deposit on a CZ 425 varmint laminate thumbhole .22lr which worked out a lot cheaper, and I will be picking it up next week. I was planning on getting the HMR first but at least this means I can get out straight away, and the HMR can wait a couple of mobths . I will upload some pictures when I get it Can't wait now Edited June 18, 2013 by ace_of_hearts
hawkeye
Get plenty of practice in with the .22 and you can take them out to 100 yds with no problem i hardly use my HMR now as the .22 is so quiet.. The HMR does have good use though i once shot 5 out of 6 rabbits that were about 130 yds away and with head shots they just dropped on the spot i should have had all 6 but the 5th one flapped about ( he didn't drop like the other ones ) and it spooked the last one ..
