ayano3
I have always stuck £25 a month away for my dogs vet bills. That gradually mounts up and after it gets what I think is plenty to cover all eventuallities I take some out and buy something for my shooting with the money. Half the time the insurance companies wont pay out for the day to day things ie injections, so why feather their nest when you could take care of your own money. Ok it take a while to build up but how many times do you actually make a claim ??

I suppose it depends on what you want to do with the dog in the unfortunate event it was badly injured or ill. i.e. treat it or have it pout down. £25 per month amounts to £3K over ten years. Your £3K won't cover much in the way of operations or long-term treatments, but would pay for an urn I guess. What amount do you get to that you believe will "cover all eventualities"? Just curious, as my KC insurnace renewal is up next month and the price seems to have hiked up a bit to over £400 if I remember rightly. I need to shop around or put money away. ferguson_tom
I am with sainsburys, they were excellent recently when i had to get my springers tail amputated. The vets filled out the insurance form for me I posted it on a Wednesday and the following Thursday I had a cheque through the door. Only thing i didnt notice on the renewal was that after the first year of insurance the excess was a set amount (f£75) plus 10% of the treatment costs, so for my springer the treatment was £580 in total and the excess was £133.00. B725
Just a word of caution there has been a lot of insurance for dogs not being covered as they are working dogs so it would pay to check.

B725
There has been some articles in the shooting times or sporting gun over the last couple years.
al4x
Interesting where is the boundary between the family pet going shooting occasionally and being a "working dog" there isn't much injury wise a dog can do out shooting that it couldn't do on any walk. B725
I do agree with you al4x but as you know insurance companies with use anything so not to pay,it would be interesting if any one on here had been turned refused it for having a gun dog. maxus77
i was with kennel club paying £45 then petplan now with M&S, keys is to make sure you get a policy that doesn't expire after that year for new or existing conditions and vets fees are for each condition cheapest i could find for that was £17 a month i have the premier cover (non working dog) excess is £75 off top of my head
Mickthemiller
I am with KC and they have just hiked their fees to £46 per month but during the last year my dog had to have a cruciate ligament repaired and treatment is still ongoing and to be fair I could not fault their service, it would probably be impossible for me to change because of the pre-existing condition, His other hip is going to need expensive treatment this year, so I will stick with them for this year however if it gets to the stage where my dog is in pain and the medication is not working then I will do the right thing. We have a new springer 4 years old The KC quoted me £44 for her which to me is far to much I received a quote from Pet Plan for the same cover £27 nearly £20 difference, but I don't know what Pet Plan are like I could do with some feedback on them if possible, I like the idea of saving but knowing that my first dog may have to have expensive treatment this year will put me off doing this.
