Fawn in the Ferns

I was out friday and had PW member 'Limestone Cowboy' with me. We were driving alongside a wood heading towards a field to decoy. The track hadn't been driven on for some time, and was now about a foot deep in fresh green foliage. Nettles and ferns etc. I stopped the car and left it where it was whilst we decoyed in this field.

A bit later, Mike was searching through the foliage for a shot pigeon, and called me over. Right beneath his feet was a very young fawn. What a fabulous sight. Things like this make these shooting days even more special, and it makes you feel privileged to have the chance to see these things.

After this we packed up and left to prevent any further worry for the fawn and its mother, which I presume wasn't too far away.

The first picture is to give an idea of the young spring foliage that it was in.

Hi Pete, things are going well enough. You'll have to let me know when that clay shoot is again, I really enjoyed the banter last time. Hopefully I'll be able to make it.

nice find :good: and a rare one I bet

how did you do on pigeons by the way

It was a bit slow I suppose, to start with. Didn't get set up until about 1.30pm because of the rain. Big amounts of birds on neighbouring large estate. No chance of shooting there.

Anyway, shot about 20 woodpigeon in total and a couple of crows. Once we came across the fawn, we decided to go and relieve it's probable stress. That was about 5.00pm.

Things were getting better at the time too. But they'll be there next time.
