Never seen digweed shoot before, he's a machine isn't he ?

Yes, he's at his very best in shoot off's like that one - he thrives under pressure, that clip of film of him shooting also dispels the myth that good shots shoot gun down, just watch Diggy, that gun is very firmly in the shoulder and his head is screwed right down on that stock before he calls "Pull".

Those that wave the gunstock around their navel whilst calling "Pull", and then wonder why they can never seem to shoot more than 50 - 60% should learn something from that.

Seeing that has inspired me to want to go to some registered shoots. Off to join the CPSA now... :good:

I am a gun up boy and do take some stick for it.

I can shoot gun down but the results are sporadic - the biggest problem I find is the butt pad / plate rucking into my clothes and screwing the shot slightly (albeit enough to miss).

I wonder if someone has recorded the clay shooting and stuck it on the web somewhere - if anyone finds it please post a link.

I just started trying gun down last week, i've found that with gun up on sporting shots i spent overall way to long measuring up lead and then it's off in the distance when i take the shot. I'm going to test the theory that if i start gun down, zip up behind the clay when it's in the 'kill area', zip in front a bang. Well that's the theory anyway! :good:

Being as they are Sky they are repeating it, I think 2.30 today is the next one.

I mix the two. Skeet and DTL I shoot gun up, along with some sporting targets. Rabbits, teals and long crossers I shoot gun down as I end up tracking too much and when I think about lead I miss :)

On some targets, there's no benefit to be gained by shooting "gun up", i.e. on long, slow incomers, however the bird that Diggy shot in the shoot off was a very fast, right to left, quartering away bird, and the quicker you can shoot it, the easier it is to kill.

The trick on a bird like that is to shoot "maintained lead" style, and never let the clay catch the barrels, keep a couple of farm gates lead on it, and always keep the gun moving.

Indeed. I don't have the experience to know I am doing the right thing, but I seem to have started adapting myself to the targets I see. If its a quick kill or very fast bird I would rush the mount so might as well start gun up.

For DTL/Skeet I think gun down would definitely mean more misses. The only exception is rabbits. I have had a torrid time on these in the past and now I have a method shown to me by the instructor on the monday madness shoot in kent. I keep the barrels low, below the target and position them just before where I want to kill the bird, then call pull, let the target reach the barrels then mount and shoot. I have straighted most rabbits since I learnt that...
