archiebald
Well I can't seem to shake off the desire for a series 3 landrover for a long while now but I can only afford to run 1 vehicle. Does anyone have one as there daily driver and how do you get on with it? I'm off to look at one tomorrow. Any info from owners would be great! Big Mat
I have one as my daily driver. The engine had a little "mishap" a couple of months ago and has cost me vast amounts of money and it isnt fixed yet! Other than that i love driving the thing, does the job for what i do perfect. Not the most comfortable things thought, They leak inside, freezing in the winter and boiling in the summer. Not very secure. Make sure the chassis and bulkhead and solid! Big Mat
hey Big Mat, you are not still playing about with it. I had my engine out and a fresh one in, in less than a week and i am seventy. I could have changed the engine, but i just couldnt bring myself to chuck in an engine that might just break again in a week, so rebuilding most of it. MOT runs out saturday! I've spent too much time waiting for it to stop raining and not getting work done! Should be finished this week! Have a look at this, bit of a problem it was. http://i1247.photobucket.com/albums/gg635/MathewTR/DSCF0254_zps8591b409.jpg Edited May 20, 2013 by Big Mat

Big Mat
If you get one that has been looked after, it'll be good to you. Get one that has been abused, then you're in for a fun ride. Make sure you have a decent set of spanners
archiebald
I'm not bad with spanners, iv repaired tons of stuff over the last few years on my vitara. My brother's got a welder also so mite look into learning that too.

Big Mat
then you will be a home and dry series man. Dry? I don't think i've been in any land rover that keeps you dry! As for insurance, i've just been sorting out this years, going to cost me £780 fully comp!
ditchman
my mate has a seris 3 ........he put a 200 seris in it without the turbo, as it would be too tourque'y...he is really chuffed with it now.........

archiebald
That seems ok by the sound of it big matt, I pay more than that for my vitara now so hopefully be a lot cheaper!

Done abit of digging to find a decent price this year.

ajb403
I have a 1979 truck cab with the 2.6L straight 6 petrol engine in it, it's my second vehicle, classic policy with mileage restricted to 3000 a year, I'm 28 and am paying £94 for this years insurance. As others have said find one that's been treated well, but still expect things to go wrong from time to time! I wouldn't fancy driving mine as my only vehicle, at an average of 16 mpg it ain't cheap to run! Oh and remember they aren't built for speed...or comfort...or reliability...or economy. But they are fun :-D
mick miller
I'd question that cliched statement about reliability. Well maintained a series motor will go on for years. I drove a iia for over 10 years, everyday, all over the country without a single breakdown and I remember coming back to heliports in winter where my vehicle had been left for two weeks and watching the tarts in their beemers and mercs struggle to get started whilst mind would fire up first time, everytime. I sold that vehicle when I moved to London 13 years ago, the guy who bought it still drives it to this day. Name me one bit of German or Japanese **** that can match that? Land Rover's get a bad name when owned by plums that treat them as if they're indestructible and need no maintenance. Look after them and they'll last a lifetime. My old series motor already had! al4x
Really it comes down to how far you drive, if you do 150 miles or less a week then it might be an option but much over that you are going to suffer. As a shooting vehicle that if it breaks is fine but if you rely on it day to day for work I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole
mick miller
Mine are both. I run a tdi defender these days and will think nothing of jumping in and driving to Buxton to see a mate. Used to use the series motor to get me to work and back everyday and to do the runs up from Norfolk to Grantham when we were drilling the Wells up there. You just can't barrel along at 70 miles an hour in a series motor. More like 50 tops. If you opt for a secondhand jap motor you'll have a little more reliability but you'll lose every penny you spend on it, it won't be worth a carrot in 5 years.
