Mossburg 500 .410 wobble noise of slide

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, like alot of you I tinker and try to imagine problem solving adaptations to things .

I recently got the above gun , it's great and iv already shot a lot with it .

The only niggle I have is the slider rattlers and wobbles about a lot and is pretty noisy for when I'm stalking about .

So I stripped the gun last night and had a look .

It seems that the tube that fits over the magazine tube has a ton of play in it and is where a lot of the rattling noise comes from .

Do you see a potential issue with having an engineer / gunsmith fitting a turned ptfe sleeve that would fill some of the gap between the two parts .

I say ptfe because I can get it in black and it's self lubricating so should allow the slider to move freely?

I know it's not a big problem the noise but its annoying me and looks fixable .

Look forward to hearing from you .

All the best , matt

What about a few strips of that sticky draught excluder? Like the furry one not the rubber strip, vet that would sort it in minutes, no tools and cost penny's.

Don't think that stuff would stay on too long once the slide had been operated a few times

PTFE is a good idea but it is soft - although that in itself might be a bonus as any 'fit' problems will soon wear off. Acetal is tougher but also has self lubricating properties, is available in black rod for machining and it doesn't absorb realistic amounts of moisture so won't swell after a rainy day.

I know what you mean about the 500's. I have a 20bore and it's slack and noisy too.

A good jobbing machinist of the 'self employed with lathe' type rather than hi tec CNC firms should be able to help you at a reasonable price.

How about a more durable, but low tech fix - along the lines of what GingerCat had?

Something cheap & fairly hard wearing, takes the metalic noise and rattling from the forend?

how about a couple or three pads/discs inside the forend somewhere (out of sight), made from something like cork, or even leather, etc.

Easy to put on with a strong glue, yet cheap enough to replace as & when needed?

Each to there own and I don't doubt many folks live with it or even love it .

Just within a .410 every inch closer counts and to shift your hand ready to take aim and clear the tree full of birds is a ball ache !

I'm sure on a bigger calibre I'd not care because I'd have that extra range .

The tolerance between the mag tube and slide is tiny , so the amount of work to turn the ptfe might out weigh the benefits ?

It might be easier to make a hole new internal tube in the slide !!

Il keep you posted guys !

:)
